Corvo is the smallest inhabited island in Portugal: fewer than 400 residents, one village, one road, and a volcanic caldera two kilometers wide that you can walk the rim of in under an hour. From Flores, it is a 45-minute crossing: close enough for a day trip, remote enough to feel like a different world entirely.
Here is how to get there, what to do when you arrive, and how to make the most of the day.
Why Corvo Is Worth the Crossing
Corvo sits 17 miles northwest of Flores and is the westernmost inhabited point of Europe. The island covers 17 square kilometers and has been occupied since the 15th century. The village of Vila do Corvo still has the same layout it had when Portuguese settlers first built it. There are no resorts, no crowds, and no car rental agencies. The pace is genuinely different from anywhere else in the Azores.
The main reason to go is the Caldeirão: a volcanic caldera at the island's highest point, roughly two kilometers across, with a crater floor that contains small lakes and farms that have been worked continuously for centuries. The rim trail takes 25 to 35 minutes and the views over the caldera and back toward Flores are exceptional on a clear day.
A day trip from Flores is the standard way to visit Corvo. Staying overnight is possible but requires advance planning. Accommodation is limited and books quickly in summer.
Getting There: Ferry vs. Boat Tour
There are two ways to cross from Flores to Corvo.
Ferry: Atlântico Line
The Atlântico Line runs the Pink Line service between Santa Cruz das Flores and Vila do Corvo. The crossing takes 40 to 55 minutes depending on sea conditions, covers 12.9 miles, and costs around €10 per person each way. It is the most budget-friendly option and the standard choice if you are traveling independently.
Dolphins are regularly seen along the crossing. The schedule changes seasonally. Check the current timetable before you go and book early in July and August, as the ferry fills up. Buying onboard is possible in low season but risky in summer, particularly on the return: missing the last ferry back means an unplanned night on Corvo.
Ferry tickets can be purchased online through the Atlântico Line website, at any RIAC office on Flores (Santa Cruz, Lajes, and Fajã Grande), or at the RIAC office in Vila do Corvo for the return.
Boat Tour from Flores (Recommended)
The boat tour option departs from the northeast coast of Flores and includes the sea caves and coastal waterfalls of Flores on the way out before crossing to Corvo. The journey to Corvo takes approximately 45 minutes. On arrival, a taxi transfer to the Caldeirão is included in the price. The driver stops at the main viewpoint overlooking the village and Flores in the background.
The return is coordinated with the boat skipper. Once back in Vila do Corvo, you have time to walk the village, visit the environmental interpretation center, and browse the local crafts before heading back.
This option is more expensive than the ferry but packages the crossing, the Flores coastal scenery, and the Caldeirão transfer into a single booking. If you have not already done the sea caves separately, it is the better value.

The Caldeirão
The Caldeirão is the main reason most people visit. The caldera sits at 718 meters at the island's high point and is approximately two kilometers wide. The crater floor holds a cluster of small islets within its lake, and the surrounding farmland has been cultivated since the 16th century. The rim trail runs 25 to 35 minutes with clear views in all directions on good days.
Weather on the plateau changes quickly. If the summit is in cloud when you arrive, the taxi driver will usually wait a short time to see if it clears. Check conditions before you commit to the morning departure. Returning to Flores without seeing the caldera is possible and not uncommon.
Vila do Corvo
The village is entirely walkable in under 30 minutes. The historic core has been inhabited since the 15th century and the street layout is largely unchanged. A few points worth visiting: the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres (the island's main church), the environmental interpretation center near the harbor, and the small local shops selling handmade crafts and local products. The village has a handful of cafes and restaurants for lunch.
Natural Pools
Corvo has a small set of natural rock pools near the harbor, accessible on foot from the village. Conditions vary with season and swell.
Practical Notes
Seasonality: The boat tour and ferry both operate year-round, but crossings can be cancelled in winter and early spring due to sea conditions. If you are visiting outside of summer, build a buffer day into your Flores stay in case the crossing is delayed or cancelled.
Timing: The Caldeirão is best in the morning before cloud builds on the summit. Aim for a departure that gets you to the crater by mid-morning at the latest.
Food: Lunch is not included in the boat tour package. The village has a small number of options; it is worth having a plan before you arrive rather than assuming everything will be open.
Luggage: If you are taking the ferry and walking independently, the transfer to the Caldeirão is a steep uphill road. Taxi transfers from the harbor are standard and inexpensive.
