1. Hotel São Jorge Garden
The only hotel on São Jorge Island, and the obvious starting point for most travelers. The São Jorge Garden is a 3-star beachfront property positioned with direct views of Mount Pico across the channel, which is one of its most frequently mentioned features: on a clear day, the view of Pico from the pool or from the room windows is genuinely striking.
The hotel is located on the waterfront just outside Velas. There are two sets of natural swimming pools immediately next to the property. Velas downtown, with its restaurants and bars, is a 10-minute walk. The staff is well-regarded for local knowledge and will point you toward things most visitors miss.
2. Cantinho das Buganvilias
A complex of tourist apartments in Velas, on the south coast. The view here covers both Mount Pico and Faial, with the channel between them in the foreground, which makes the infinity pool area particularly good in the late afternoon. The complex also has a jacuzzi.
The location is practical: 10 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from the Velas historic center on foot. The apartments are fully equipped, which makes this a solid choice for stays of more than a few nights where having a kitchen matters.
3. Abrigo da Cascata
A traditional Azorean house in Fajã do Cavalete, in the municipality of Calheta on the western part of the island. The property has been completely rebuilt on the inside while preserving its original exterior, keeping the stone walls and architectural character that defines the older buildings on São Jorge. It's a smaller, more rural option than the Velas properties, suited to travelers who want to be away from the island's main town.
Calheta is about a 25-minute drive from Velas, so staying here means more driving to reach most things on the island. That said, the western fajãs are closer from this base.
4. INTACT Farm & Bungalow
A farm stay about 10 minutes from the airport, oriented toward guests who want to be outdoors and active rather than in a tourist complex. The property sits near Velas, with views of Pico do Pedro. Rooms have modern bathrooms (separate toilet and shower), tea and coffee facilities, and high-speed internet.
The farm's position makes hiking, snorkeling, and fishing all accessible within a short distance. It's a quieter option than the Velas apartments and suits travelers who are on the island primarily for the fajãs, trails, and coast rather than the town.
5. Quinta da Magnólia
A rural accommodation property in the Parish of Urzelina, in the eastern part of São Jorge. Urzelina is known for the church tower left standing after a 1808 lava flow buried the surrounding village, which is one of the more unusual landmarks on the island. Staying in this area puts you closer to Topo Islet and the eastern coast, while the drive to the Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo from Urzelina is roughly 45 minutes.
