Where to Eat on Corvo Island: Restaurants, Cafés & Local Food

The Restaurant

Caldeirão Restaurant

Caldeirão is the only sit-down restaurant on Corvo. It sits on Caminho dos Moinhos and is open every day from 07h00 to 23h00, making it the most reliable option on the island for a full meal. The menu is built around local fish and meat, and the kitchen uses produce that is available on Corvo and from the surrounding Atlantic.

Caldeirão is where you will most likely encounter the island's traditional dishes in a proper sit-down setting. If you are visiting in October during birding season, the restaurant can be busy when groups are on the island. No advance booking system is listed; calling ahead is advisable for larger groups.

Cafés and Snack-Bars

BBC

BBC is on Avenida Nova and serves as the island's most social bar and café. Hours run late on weekends, making it the closest thing Corvo has to a night-out option. It is a good spot for a drink after dinner, coffee in the morning, or a light meal during the day.

Irmãos Metralha

One of the most consistently open spots on the island. Daily hours from 07h00 to midnight mean it covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Located on Rua Joaquim Pedro Coelho in the village center.

Izzy Burguer

Located on Estrada do Caldeirão, closer to the road toward the caldera than the other spots. Opens later in the day, focused on burgers and grilled food. The Saturday and Sunday midday opening makes it a useful stop before or after a morning hike.

O Manny

On Caminho da Várzea, close to the Joe & Vera's accommodation. O Manny is a café and snack-bar with a local following. No fixed hours are published; ask at your accommodation for current opening times.

What to Order

Corvo's food is defined by its Atlantic location and small-island resourcefulness. The island produces its own cheese, relies heavily on fresh fish, and has a handful of dishes with no real equivalent anywhere else.

Conger Eel Stew is the flagship dish. Caught fresh from the Atlantic waters around the island, the eel is cooked with potatoes, tomatoes, onions, peppers, garlic, and bay leaf. It is the kind of dish that travels well from fishing tradition to restaurant table without losing anything.

Grilled Limpets (lapas) are shared across all Azorean islands, but on Corvo they are prepared with garlic, butter, and lemon in the local style. Order them as a starter when they are available. This is the dish most visitors remember.

Erva do Calhau Pastries are specific to Corvo. They are made from a local coastal seaweed (Ulva intestinalis), mixed with eggs and flour and lightly fried. The connection between the village and the sea goes back centuries, and this pastry is one of the few food traditions that exists nowhere else in the Azores. Worth trying if they are on offer.

Barça-Style Cabbage with Pork is a slow-cooked dish of pork and cabbage, served with broa (traditional cornbread). It reflects the island's farming tradition more than its fishing one, and it is the kind of substantial meal that makes sense after a long day hiking.

Corvo Cheese is an artisanal semi-hard cow's milk cheese made locally. It has a slightly spicy flavour and a texture close to a young manchego. It appears on plates across the island and is sold directly on Corvo. If you find it, pick some up to take home.
