Walking Tours: Lagoa do Fogo (full day w/ picnic lunch)

About the Experience

The tour begins with a drive along the south coast of the island, with ocean views and to the hills of the mountain of Lagoa do Fogo. This 11 kms trail begins in a dirt path through woods of Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), australian cheesewood (Pittosporum undulatum) wild kahili ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum). and New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax, a New Zealand plant ) and an enormous number of endemic plants. . The trail then continues along the levada ( about 2 kms) until you reach a wider area, with large slopes on both sides going to the margins of Lagoa do Fogo. During the ascent there are several places where you can enjoy a magnificent view of Vila Franca do Campo and his Islet and the hills of the south side of the island. The stop for lunch is made along , the shores of the lake. The return to the initial point is made by a path that traverses an area covered in endemic vegetation, flowing into an area of pastures, as we lower altitude, arriving near by the initial point. Finished the walking tour, we return to Ponta Delgada, including a visit to the bathing area of Caloura harbour, with a confort stop and possibility of swimming in the natural pool. We finish the activity with a drive in the south coast back to Ponta Delgada.

• 14:00 - End of the trail
• 14:30 - Visit to Caloura harbour
• 16:00 – Arrival at Ponta Delgada and end of activity

Minimum equipment necessary:

Footwear suitable for walking (Boots), comfortable clothing, light jacket, extra t-shirt or sweatshirt, snack, water, swimsuit, towel, backpack, sunscreen and hat.

Recommended equipment:

Walking poles , and gaiters (Winter).

Minimum age: 6 years old

(until 18 years must be accompanied by parents or guardians, , or bring a written permission).
