This experience combines the discovery of the island's stunning landscape with a theme that arouses a lot of curiosity in visitors. The importance and the role of this island in World War II and above all during the Cold War. The military installations are of the most varied types and occupied several areas on the island besides the base of Lajes. We start with the troops and equipment landing area. The first camping area and temporary storage area for equipment and supplies. Several fuel parks, weapons and ammunition storage areas, recreational areas, important communications and surveillance stations and war cemetery. Support for important international operations. Presence of the US Navy and Strategic Air Command in Lajes. Main aircraft crash sites. Housing area and stunning viewpoints. Important military operations linked to the Lajes air base. In addition to this endless number of points of interest, it is also extremely important to understand the impact on the local population, and the respective relationship over time with the foreign forces that have passed through here.
