As you head down to the west, make sure you don’t skip a visit to Porto Afonso. This fishing harbour is one of the most iconic sights of Graciosa Island, and once you’re there you’ll get why. There used to be a fort on the site, built to protect the island from the entrance of pirates. Nowadays it is used as a port and as a swimming area in the summer. The most interesting thing about it is that the locals have shaped the redish volcanic rocks in order for it to protect the boats from the sea.

You’ll first get down to the Earth’s interior through a 200 meter tunnel, followed by a spiral staircase with 183 steps. There are several windows on the way down for you to take a sneak peak of the Furna.

This cave is a part of the Furna da Maria Encantada hiking trail in Graciosa Island, and all of the site is impressive. The cave for its perfect shape and right amount of sunlight, and the views to the Caldeira behind are beautiful as well.
