There are two ways to see the Azores as a group. You can join one of our guided group tours, which run on set dates with flights, hotel, transfers, a trip manager and the main excursions included, and suit solo travellers, couples and small parties who want the logistics handled. Or you can bring your own group, from six friends to a company of sixty, and have us build a private trip around your dates and interests. The islands reward groups: the best experiences, from the cozido at Furnas to a whale-watching catamaran to a Pico wine tasting, work better shared, and the small hotels, vans and boats mean planning matters more here than in a city.
Below: how each option works, what is included, what a group trip to the Azores costs, the practical constraints of the islands for groups, and how to start.
Why the Azores Work for Groups
The Azores are a nature destination where almost everything worth doing is an activity rather than a sight you wander past: a boat trip, a guided hike, a van tour to crater lakes, a thermal bath, a lunch cooked in volcanic ground. That makes them easy to enjoy as a group, because a shared day on a whale-watching catamaran or a Furnas cozido table is the experience, and the islands' mild weather, light traffic and short distances keep a group moving without the fatigue of a big-city itinerary. The price level helps too: restaurant meals, tours and accommodation cost less than in most of Western Europe, so a group budget stretches further than it would in Italy or the Greek islands.
What the islands do not have is big-group infrastructure. Hotels are small (the largest on São Miguel have around 100 to 200 rooms and most have far fewer), tour vans carry eight or nine passengers, whale-watching boats hold 12 to 70 people depending on the type, and restaurants that can seat 40 for one sitting are limited. A group of ten is easy anywhere; a group of forty needs a plan, several vehicles and advance bookings in the places that matter. That is the practical reason to organise a group trip through someone on the ground rather than booking it piece by piece.
Option 1: Join a Guided Group Tour
Our guided group tours are fixed-date departures that bundle everything a first-time visitor needs: return flights from your home airport (direct from Boston, New York, Toronto or Lisbon, or connecting from elsewhere), a downtown hotel, airport transfers, daily breakfast, the main day tours with local guides, some meals and an expert trip manager who travels with the group. You book a place, as a solo traveller, a couple or a small party, and join a group of other travellers on the same dates. Groups are capped at 50 but are usually much smaller, and the itineraries mix structured days with free time, so you are not on a coach for a week.
The São Miguel tour is the right one for a first visit: seven nights in Ponta Delgada with a city tour, the Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo day, the Furnas day with hot springs, whale and dolphin watching and two traditional lunches, plus free days to explore. The Azores and Madeira trip combines a week on São Miguel with a week on Madeira for travellers who want both archipelagos in one journey, with eight group experiences across the two islands. Departure dates run through the year with the most choice from April to October, and the tours sell on an on-sale basis with early-booking prices.
SÃO MIGUEL: 1-WEEK GUIDED GROUP TOUR

A week on São Miguel and a week on Madeira with all flights, hotels, transfers, eight group experiences, daily breakfast and a trip manager. For travellers who want both Atlantic archipelagos in one trip.
See dates and prices →A guided group tour suits solo travellers who want company and safety in numbers, couples who prefer not to drive or plan, and friends or relatives who want a ready-made week. It suits less well anyone who wants to set their own pace every day or to stay outside Ponta Delgada; for those, the private option or an independent package with a car is the better fit.
Option 2: Bring Your Own Group
If you already have the group, a family reunion, a wedding party, a club, a school or university trip, a hiking or photography group, a company offsite or an incentive trip, we build the trip around you. You choose the dates, the islands, the pace and the budget level; we handle flights, hotels (or a private villa or several guesthouses in one village), vans and drivers, guides, boats, restaurant bookings for the whole party, and a single point of contact before and during the trip. Private groups start at around six people; above roughly 15, the planning becomes a logistics exercise in vehicles, boat capacity and restaurant seating, which is where a local team earns its fee.
The things private groups ask for most are a private whale-watching boat, a cozido lunch at Furnas with the pots lifted for the group, a wine tasting among the UNESCO vineyards of Pico, a guided hike with a private guide, canyoning for the adventurous half while the rest take the hot springs, and a farewell dinner in a quinta. Corporate groups add meeting space, which the larger Ponta Delgada and Furnas hotels provide, and team activities such as a sailing regatta or a cooking class. Multi-island groups move by SATA inter-island flights or, in the central group, by Atlânticoline ferry, both of which we block-book because capacity in summer is limited.
PLAN A PRIVATE GROUP TRIP
Tell us the size of your group, your dates and what kind of trip you have in mind, and a local travel advisor comes back with a proposal. Family reunions, weddings, clubs, schools, company retreats and incentive trips.
Request a group proposal →What a Group Trip to the Azores Costs
Guided group tours are priced per person and published on each tour page; the São Miguel week is currently on sale from about 1,350 dollars per person including flights from the US East Coast, hotel, transfers, tours and the trip manager, and the two-week Azores and Madeira trip from about 2,600 dollars. Those prices move with the season and the departure airport, and early bookers pay least.
Private groups are quoted individually, because the variables are many: the level of hotel, whether flights are included, how many guided days, private versus shared boats, meals. As a rough guide, a comfortable private group week on São Miguel with a three- or four-star hotel, breakfast, airport transfers, three guided full days with van and guide, a whale-watching trip and two group dinners lands in the region of 1,200 to 1,800 euros per person on the ground, before flights, with the per-person cost falling as the group grows because vehicles and guides are shared. Groups travelling in May, June, September or October pay noticeably less than in July and August and find far more availability. Local accommodation tax in the Azores is around 2 to 3 euros per person per night, capped at three nights, and is paid at the hotel.
Practical Notes for Groups in the Azores
Book early. The constraint on the islands is capacity, not price: the few hotels that can take 20 rooms together, the boats with 50 places, the restaurants with a private room, and inter-island flights in summer all sell out months ahead. For a summer group of more than 15, start planning six to nine months out; for spring or autumn, three to four months is usually enough.
Plan for weather. Every outdoor day in the Azores can be changed by fog or swell, so a good group itinerary has a built-in swap: if the whale-watching trip is cancelled on Tuesday it runs on Thursday and the Furnas day moves. A trip manager or local coordinator makes this painless; a self-organised group of 30 finds it hard.
Mix abilities. Groups almost always include people who want to hike and people who want to sit in a hot spring. Build days with two tracks (a canyoning or hiking group and a spa or village group that rejoin for lunch) rather than forcing one activity on everyone.
Keep the group in one place. Ponta Delgada for São Miguel, Angra for Terceira, Horta or Madalena for the central islands. Moving a group between hotels costs half a day each time, and the islands are small enough that day trips from one base cover everything.
Leave free time. The Azores' charm is in the unhurried village café, the unplanned viewpoint and the long dinner. The best group itineraries we run have a free afternoon every two days and at least one evening without a group meal.
Which Islands for a Group?
São Miguel for almost every group: it has the airport, the hotels, the restaurants and the widest range of activities, and a week there fills easily. Terceira as a second island for groups interested in history, festivals and food, with Angra's hotels and restaurants able to host larger parties. Pico and Faial for active and wine-minded groups, with the mountain, the vineyards, the whaling heritage and the best whale-watching in the islands, accepting smaller hotels and ferry logistics. Santa Maria for diving groups in the mobula season. Flores and Corvo for small, hardy groups only, because capacity is tiny and weather disruption is real. Our guide to which Azores island to visit first compares all nine for any traveller.

Azores Group Trips: FAQ
Are there small group tours to the Azores?
Yes. Our guided group tours run on fixed dates with flights, hotel, transfers, the main excursions and a trip manager included. Groups are capped at 50 and are usually much smaller, with a mix of guided days and free time.
Can I join a group tour as a solo traveller?
Yes, and many do. The São Miguel one-week tour is built for first-time visitors and solo travellers who want company and the logistics handled. Ask about single-room options when booking.
How big a group can travel to the Azores?
Private groups start at around six people. Groups of 15 to 60 are common for reunions, clubs and companies and need advance planning because hotels, vans and boats on the islands are small. Larger groups are possible on São Miguel with several hotels and vehicles.
How much does a group trip to the Azores cost?
Guided group tours from about 1,350 dollars per person for a week on São Miguel including flights from the US East Coast, and about 2,600 dollars for two weeks across the Azores and Madeira, on current sale prices. Private groups are quoted individually; a comfortable week on São Miguel typically costs 1,200 to 1,800 euros per person on the ground before flights, less per head as the group grows.
Which island is best for a group?
São Miguel, for its airport, hotels, restaurants and the widest range of activities. Add Terceira for history and festivals or Pico and Faial for an active, wine-minded group. The smallest islands have very limited capacity.
How far in advance should a group book?
Six to nine months for a summer group of more than 15 people, three to four months for spring or autumn. Capacity on the islands, not price, is what runs out.
Do group tours include flights?
The guided group tours do, from Boston, New York, Toronto, Montreal or Lisbon, with connections arranged from other airports and the option to upgrade cabin class. Private group trips can be quoted with or without flights.
Can a company hold a retreat or incentive trip in the Azores?
Yes. The larger hotels in Ponta Delgada and Furnas have meeting rooms, and the islands offer team activities from sailing and canyoning to cooking classes and private wine tastings. We arrange the full programme including transfers and group dinners.
What happens if the weather cancels an activity?
Boat trips and some hikes are weather-dependent. Group itineraries are built with swap days, so a cancelled whale-watching trip is rescheduled within the week; the trip manager or your coordinator handles the changes.
Is a group tour better than renting a car?
For a first visit without the wish to drive or plan, yes. Independent travellers who want their own pace do better with a package that includes a rental car; see our guide on whether you need a car in the Azores.
