São Miguel is served by Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL), the main aviation hub of the Azores. Direct flights connect it to Lisbon year-round, to several European cities in summer, and to Boston and New York from North America. Once you land, you need a rental car — the island's main sights are spread out and public transport covers very little of what visitors want to see.

Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL)
Ponta Delgada Airport (IATA: PDL) is located 3 km from the city centre. It is a mid-sized airport with a single terminal. Car rental desks are inside the arrivals hall. There is an AeroBus service (ANC Aerobus) connecting the terminal to the city centre for those not renting a car. Taxis and Bolt are also available outside arrivals.
The airport handles a mix of year-round and seasonal routes. In peak summer, it operates direct connections to over 20 European cities. Outside the June to September window, route frequency drops and most European connections require a connection in Lisbon.
Flying from Europe
From Portugal: TAP operates multiple daily flights from Lisbon (LIS) and from Porto (OPO) year-round. Azores Airlines (SATA) also flies the Lisbon to Ponta Delgada route daily. These are the most reliable and frequent connections, with flight times around two hours.
From the UK: British Airways operates a direct seasonal route from London Heathrow (LHR) to Ponta Delgada, running roughly once a week. Outside the summer season, UK passengers typically connect through Lisbon. Note that Ryanair discontinued all its Azores routes in March 2026, which removed the most affordable direct option from several UK and European airports.
From other European cities: During summer (roughly June through September), Ponta Delgada receives direct flights from Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Brussels, and several Scandinavian cities, operated by a mix of Azores Airlines and European carriers. Most of these are seasonal and do not run in winter.
From France: Air France and TAP operate connections via Lisbon. Azores Airlines operates some direct summer routes from Paris Charles de Gaulle.
From Germany: Condor and seasonal charter operators run summer direct flights from Frankfurt (FRA) and other German airports. Outside summer, route via Lisbon.

From Boston (BOS): Azores Airlines (SATA) operates a direct route from Boston Logan to Ponta Delgada, typically running from spring through autumn. Flight time is approximately 4.5 hours. This is the most direct connection available from the US East Coast and one of the shortest transatlantic routes in operation.
From New York (JFK/EWR): Direct seasonal service from New York is operated by Azores Airlines and occasionally by other carriers. Flight time is approximately 5 hours. Check current schedules — routing and frequency change by season and year.
From Canada: Connections typically route through Lisbon or Boston. Azores Airlines operates seasonal transatlantic routes from Toronto (YYZ) in some years; confirm availability for your travel dates.
From other US cities: Most routes to the Azores from the continental US require a connection, typically in Lisbon (TAP) or Boston (Azores Airlines).
Getting from the Airport to Ponta Delgada
The airport is 3 km from the city centre — a short taxi or Bolt ride. Options on arrival:
Car rental: The most practical choice if you are renting for the trip. Desks for all major companies (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, and local operators) are inside the arrivals terminal. Pick up on arrival and return on departure. Prices are competitive; book in advance during July and August when demand is high.
AeroBus (ANC Aerobus): A shuttle service connecting the airport to Ponta Delgada city centre. Runs on a schedule; check departure times at the airport.
Bolt: Available in Ponta Delgada and its immediate surroundings. Works from the airport into town. Uber does not currently operate on São Miguel.
Taxi: Available outside arrivals. Fixed rates apply for journeys within Ponta Delgada municipality.
Getting Around São Miguel
Car rental is the practical choice for any itinerary that covers the main sights. Sete Cidades, Furnas, the north coast tea plantations, and most viewpoints are not accessible by public transport on any useful schedule. The island is 65 km long; distances are manageable, and most roads are two-lane and well-maintained. The caldera access roads and some mountain routes are narrower.
Driving in the Azores follows standard right-hand traffic rules, the same as mainland Portugal. A valid driver's licence from any EU country, the US, UK, Canada, or Australia is accepted without an international permit.
Bolt is available within Ponta Delgada and its immediate area for getting around the city or making short transfers, but is not practical for reaching viewpoints or attractions outside the urban area.
Local buses (Empresa de Viação Terceirense / EVT) serve some routes across the island but run on limited schedules and rarely align with visitor priorities. Suitable for commuting within Ponta Delgada; not a practical replacement for a rental car.
Organised day tours depart daily from Ponta Delgada and cover the island's main sights — Sete Cidades, Furnas, north coast — in fixed combinations. An option if you prefer not to drive, though they operate on set routes and timing.

Inter-Island Connections
São Miguel is a good base for visiting other Azores islands. It has the best flight connections and the most accommodation options in the archipelago.
Flights: Azores Airlines (SATA) operates inter-island flights connecting São Miguel to the other eight islands. Most flights are short — typically 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes. Fares can be significant, particularly on short notice. Book inter-island legs in advance, especially in summer, as capacity is limited.
Ferry: Atlânticoline operates inter-island ferry services between some islands in summer. The ferry is slower than flying but less expensive and a different experience. Routes and schedules change each year; check the Atlânticoline website for the current season's timetable. From Ponta Delgada, ferry connections run to Terceira, Faial, and Pico in season.
