Graciosa is one of the smallest and least visited islands in the Azores. The advantages of that scale are real: you can drive across it in under 30 minutes, the main sights are never crowded (except Furna do Enxofre in peak season), and two full days is genuinely enough to see everything. The itineraries below are built around a rental car and a base in Santa Cruz da Graciosa. If you have only one day, see the prioritized version at the end of this article.
Base: Santa Cruz da Graciosa | Transport: Rental car required | Best season: May to October
2-Day Itinerary
Day 1: The Caldeira Zone and Northwest Coast
The first day covers the geological heart of Graciosa and the island's most dramatic coastal scenery.
Morning: Furna do Enxofre (09:00 to 11:00)
Start as early as possible at Furna do Enxofre. The cave opens for guided visits from mid-morning; arriving at opening avoids the largest groups and leaves more of the day available. The guided cave visit takes approximately 1 hour including the tunnel walk, the 183-step spiral staircase descent, and time at the viewing platforms near the underground lake. Book your slot in advance if visiting in July or August.
Mid-morning: Caldeira Rim Trail (11:00 to 13:00)
From the cave entrance, continue to the Caldeira rim. The circuit trail runs at 405 meters altitude with views across the whole island and, on clear days, to Terceira, São Jorge, and Pico. The walk takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on pace. On the way, descend to Furna da Maria Encantada, a lava cave with a natural opening that frames the Caldeira; it adds 30 to 45 minutes and is worth it.
Lunch: Return to Santa Cruz (13:00 to 14:30)
Drive back to Santa Cruz for lunch. The town's restaurants serve fresh fish and the island's grilled limpets. Queijadas da Graciosa, the island's signature pastry, are available at most cafes.
Afternoon: Ponta da Barca and Northwest Coast (15:00 to 17:30)
Drive northwest to Ponta da Barca. The lighthouse sits on a basalt promontory 71 meters above the sea, with open Atlantic views and the Baleia Islets offshore. The afternoon light is good on this coastline from 15:00 onwards. The drive from Santa Cruz takes about 15 minutes; the coastal walk from the lighthouse parking area adds another 1 to 2 hours if you want to extend.
Evening: Santa Cruz (18:00 onwards)
Return to Santa Cruz for the evening. The waterfront area below the town has views east along the north coast at sunset.
Day 2: South Coast, Windmills, and Thermal Baths
The second day covers the human landscape of Graciosa: windmills, the queijadas factory, beaches, and the island's thermal spa.
Morning: Vila da Praia and the Windmills (09:00 to 11:00)
Drive south from Santa Cruz to Vila da Praia (approximately 10 minutes). The concentration of Flemish-influenced windmills around the village is the most distinctive visual element of Graciosa's landscape. The best overview is from the road above the village, where multiple windmills appear together against the sea and Praia Islet. Two windmills are available as accommodation if you want to extend your stay.
Mid-morning: Fábrica das Queijadas da Graciosa (10:30 to 11:30)
The queijadas factory is in Vila da Praia, a short walk from the windmills. The shop sells pastries fresh and packaged. If you timed the visit for a morning when a batch has just been baked, the warm queijadas at the source are materially different from the packaged version. Tours of the production process are available.
Midday: Praia de São Mateus and Praia do Barro Vermelho (11:30 to 13:30)
Two sandy beaches near Vila da Praia. Praia do Barro Vermelho is named for the reddish volcanic earth above it. Both are quiet even in July and August, with water reaching 22 to 24°C in late summer. Lunch at a restaurant near Vila da Praia before continuing south.
Afternoon: Carapacho and the Termas (14:30 to 17:00)
Drive east along the south coast to Carapacho. Stop at the viewpoint above the village for the wide coastal panorama before descending to the Termas do Carapacho. The thermal spa has been in operation since 1750; the complex sits above the ocean with both indoor therapeutic pools and outdoor natural seawater pools. An afternoon session of 1 to 1.5 hours is ideal.
Late Afternoon: Porto Afonso (17:00 to 18:00)
On the return drive, stop at Porto Afonso on the west coast. The old fishing harbor with its shaped volcanic rock breakwaters is one of the island's quieter sights and is best in the late afternoon light.
Evening: Dinner in Santa Cruz
Return to Santa Cruz for a final dinner. The Pedras Brancas local wine pairs well with fresh Atlantic fish; both are available at most restaurants in town.
3-Day Itinerary
Follow the 2-day itinerary for days 1 and 2. Day 3 uses the extra time for hiking, the island museum, and slower revisits.
Day 3: Hiking, Museum, and Loose Ends
Morning: Serra Branca Trail or Second Caldeira Walk (09:00 to 12:00)
If you have the energy for more walking, the Serra Branca trail covers different terrain from the Caldeira circuit: volcanic uplands, pale limestone soils, and native vegetation with views across a wide arc of the island. It takes 2 to 3.5 hours. Alternatively, return to the Caldeira for a slower walk without the time pressure of the first day.
Midday: Museu da Graciosa (12:00 to 13:00)
The island museum in Santa Cruz covers Graciosa's geological formation, maritime history, and everyday life. The collection is specific to this island and provides context for what you have seen over the previous two days. The visit takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Afternoon: Ponta da Restinga and the South Coast (14:30 to 16:30)
Drive to the southeastern tip of the island at Ponta da Restinga, one of the least visited viewpoints with views along the full south coast. This is a good afternoon stop for visitors who want somewhere quiet and off the main tourist circuit.
Late afternoon: Return to the Termas or the Beach
If you did not make it to the beaches on day 2, or want a final swim, the beaches near Vila da Praia are the best option. Alternatively, a second visit to the Termas do Carapacho for a longer session works well on the last afternoon.
If You Only Have One Day
If you are visiting Graciosa on a day trip from Terceira, prioritize in this order: Furna do Enxofre (90 minutes), Caldeira rim walk (60 to 90 minutes), Ponta da Barca lighthouse (30 to 45 minutes), Vila da Praia windmills and queijadas (45 minutes). Skip the beaches and Termas; they need more time than a single day allows without rushing.
GUIDED ISLAND TOURS
Guided full-day island tours of Graciosa cover Furna do Enxofre, the Caldeira, Ponta da Barca, windmill stops, and the south coast in a single day with a local guide. Practical for visitors without a rental car or those who prefer local context on the geological sites.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do you need on Graciosa Island?
Two full days covers all the main sights at a relaxed pace. Day 1 works for the Caldeira zone (Furna do Enxofre, the rim walk, Furna da Maria Encantada) and the Ponta da Barca northwest coast. Day 2 covers the south coast: windmills, the queijadas factory, the beaches, Carapacho, and the Termas. Three days is ideal if you want to hike the Serra Branca trail, revisit the Caldeira more slowly, or spend a full morning at the thermal baths.
What is the best way to get around Graciosa?
A rental car is the only practical option for covering the island's sights at your own pace. The island takes under 30 minutes to cross by car. Public transport is limited in frequency and does not serve all the main sites reliably. Rental cars are available at Graciosa Airport; book in advance in July and August. Vacation packages through Azores Getaways include a pre-arranged rental car.
Should I visit Furna do Enxofre in the morning or afternoon?
Morning is better for two reasons: group sizes are smaller at opening, and the cave visit takes about 1 hour, which leaves the full afternoon for the Caldeira rim trail and the northwest coast in good light. If seeing the natural skylight beam at midday is the priority, plan the cave visit for around 13:00 on a clear day. The skylight phenomenon is weather-dependent; there is no guarantee of clear skies.
Can you do a day trip to Graciosa from Terceira?
Yes, but it is tight. The flight from Terceira to Graciosa takes about 30 minutes. A single day gives time for Furna do Enxofre, the Caldeira, and Ponta da Barca, with a quick stop at the windmills and queijadas factory. It does not leave time for the beaches, the Termas, or a slow lunch. Two nights on the island gives a much more complete experience.
Is Graciosa suitable for families with children?
Yes. The island has no demanding terrain that is inaccessible to families; the Caldeira trail and the Furna da Maria Encantada walk are both manageable for older children. Furna do Enxofre has a 183-step staircase with handrails and is suitable for children who are comfortable with heights and enclosed spaces. The beaches near Vila da Praia are safe and quiet. The island's small scale means distances between sites are short.
What should I not miss on Graciosa?
Furna do Enxofre is the one non-negotiable. After that: the Caldeira rim trail for the island panorama, Ponta da Barca for the coastal scenery and lighthouse, the windmills at Vila da Praia for the island's visual signature, and the queijadas da Graciosa from the factory while they are warm. The Termas do Carapacho is the best way to end a full day of driving and walking.
