Yes, round-trip flights are included. Other departure cities are available on the package page, and additional options are available on request. Contact the Azores Getaways team before booking to discuss departure options. Seat selection, extra baggage, and cabin class upgrades are not included in the package price but can be arranged as paid add-ons, subject to availability.
Checked luggage is not always included and depends on the airline and fare type selected for your package. You can confirm baggage allowances and add luggage during the booking process. The Azores Getaways team is also available to help arrange this directly if preferred.
A rental car is included for your stay on São Miguel Island and will be available for pickup upon arrival. The standard vehicle is usually a small or compact manual car. Automatic transmission may be available on request, sometimes at an additional cost. You'll need a valid Canadian or US passport and driver's license at pickup. An International Driving Permit is optional but recommended as a backup.
The rental includes basic third-party liability insurance, and depending on the car rental company, a collision damage waiver (CDW) may already be included. Even with CDW, most rentals have a mandatory excess, which is the amount you are responsible for paying out of pocket if the car is damaged. We always recommend upgrading to the highest insurance level available, which eliminates or significantly reduces that excess and covers you across all risks. This can be arranged through the Azores Getaways team when booking with an agent.
There are no toll roads in the Azores. Parking is widely available at most hotels, viewpoints, and attractions, though it is not always free. In Ponta Delgada, paid parking zones are marked with blue signs. You drive on the right-hand side, the same as in mainland Portugal. Roads are generally well-maintained, though some rural routes may include narrow sections and sharp turns. Fog can appear quickly at higher elevations, so extra caution is recommended when driving in mountain areas.
Ride-sharing apps are limited in the Azores, although Bolt operates in São Miguel on a limited basis. Taxis are more widely available around Ponta Delgada and nearby towns but may be harder to find in remote areas. Public buses exist across the island, though schedules can be infrequent and many natural attractions are not easily accessible by public transport. If you prefer not to drive on a specific day, the Azores Getaways team can suggest alternative routes or help arrange a guided experience with transportation included.
This is an independent fly-and-drive package. The day-by-day itinerary is a set of suggestions, not a fixed programme, allowing you to explore São Miguel at your own pace. Optional experiences such as whale watching, canyoning, hiking tours, thermal bath experiences, and food tours can be added when booking. Contact the Azores Getaways team and we’ll help customize your trip.
The package includes hotels ranging from 3 to 5 stars across São Miguel Island. Options range from boutique nature hotels and thermal retreats to well-known international brands and city hotels in Ponta Delgada. Some properties are located in quieter coastal or countryside areas rather than directly in the city center. Exact hotel options are shown when you click a date in the booking calendar and proceed to the next step. Upgrade and budget-friendly options are available on request. Contact the Azores Getaways team to discuss your preferences before booking.
Most hotels in this package are likely to offer on-site parking or nearby parking options. You can confirm the parking details for your selected property during the booking process or by contacting the Azores Getaways team. City taxes are not included and are paid directly at the hotel during check-in or check-out. The amount varies depending on the municipality and hotel category.
Daily breakfast is included throughout your stay. Lunches and dinners are not included, giving you the freedom to discover local restaurants and authentic Azorean cuisine. São Miguel is famous for specialties such as Cozido das Furnas, slowly cooked underground using volcanic heat, as well as fresh seafood, local cheeses, and tropical fruits grown on the island.
Yes. The Azores Getaways team can help you add extra nights, include additional experiences, or customize your itinerary. Additional costs may apply. Solo travelers are welcome, though package pricing is generally based on two travelers sharing a room, so a single supplement may apply. You can also check solo pricing directly in the booking calendar by changing the number of travelers before clicking “See Dates and Prices.”
The Azores are part of Portugal and the European Union. Canadian and US passport holders do not currently need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. The Azores are a stable and safe destination with no active conflicts, not affected by the current conflicts in Europe or elsewhere. We recommend checking your government's official travel advisory before departure.
The land portion of your package is refundable if cancelled at least 14 days before your travel date. Airfare is non-refundable from the moment it is issued, but the Azores Getaways team will always check with the airline to explore options. Travel insurance with cancellation cover is strongly recommended. This summary does not replace the full terms and conditions of your booking, which we encourage you to read before confirming.
For general support during office hours, contact the Azores Getaways team at our regular number. Support is available every day from 8:00 AM to 12:00 AM Azores Time. Outside office hours, an emergency number is provided in your trip documents. For local emergencies in the Azores, dial 112.
