Experience the Azores Through a Traditional “Cozido” Cooking Class

Join us for a truly unique culinary adventure where you’ll learn to prepare the famous Cozido das Furnas—a traditional Azorean stew slow-cooked underground using the natural steam from volcanic activity.

Led by a local chef, this hands-on class will guide you through the ingredients, techniques, and cultural stories behind this iconic dish.

Here’s what your day will look like:

• At 9 AM, head to Maria’s home in Fenais da Luz (just a 20-minute drive from Ponta Delgada). There, she’ll walk you through how the cozido is prepared—what ingredients are used, how they’re layered, and the secrets that make it so flavorful.
• Once the pot is ready, you’ll follow the organizer (in your own vehicle) to Furnas, where you’ll place the pot in one of the volcanic steam holes—known as caldeiras—to cook for approximately six hours.
• Later in the afternoon, you’ll return to the caldeira site to remove the pot and enjoy a shared dinner in the nearby picnic area, tasting the delicious result of your work.
• After the meal, the organizer will head back, and you can choose to return to Ponta Delgada or take some extra time to explore the charming town of Furnas at your own pace.

This experience is more than a cooking class—it’s an immersion into the flavors, traditions, and geothermal wonders of the Azores.
