São Miguel: 1-Month Stay w/ Car
29 Nights: One base on São Miguel, with a kitchenette to cook in and a rental car for the whole stay.

Dates and Prices
Your Azores Trip Itinerary
29 nights | Flights, stay with kitchenette and rental car | Self-drive guide | São Miguel
A month on São Miguel with one base: 29 nights in accommodation with a kitchenette, a rental car for the whole stay, round-trip flights and our self-drive guide. Staying longer brings the cost per night down, and cooking some meals with fruit, cheese and fish from the local markets trims it further. A month leaves room for Sete Cidades, the hot springs of Furnas, the northeast, and for days of doing very little.
Frederico L. · Travel Sales Advisor
“Keep a slow morning for Gorreana, on the north coast: the tea fields are still worked today, and you can walk between the rows and see how the tea is made. A month is a long time to be away, and we are close by for anything you need along the way.”

- Day 1
Arrival
.jpg)
Welcome to São Miguel! Pick up your rental car on arrival and check in to your accommodation with a kitchenette. This 29-night stay gives you a month to see the island at your own pace.
Suggestion for the day: A Gentle First Day
- Data and maps: a data SIM card from one of the telecom stores inside Ponta Delgada airport, and the São Miguel map downloaded on Google Maps
- A first grocery run: supermarkets in Ponta Delgada and the larger towns, so the kitchenette is ready from the first evening
- Portas do Mar: the waterfront promenade in Ponta Delgada, with many restaurants for a first dinner
Good to know: check the Spotazores webcams every morning. Foggy days are good for Furnas, and clear days are better for the high places, Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, so swap days freely. Prices and opening hours in this itinerary are approximate, so check before you go.
All suggestions are optional.
Included:
- Rental car for the whole stay
- Accommodation with a kitchenette
Itinerary note: This itinerary is a suggestion and the pace of each day is up to you. All tours and activities are suggestions unless clearly stated as included. Accommodations and car pick-up details are exactly as listed in your booking confirmation.

- Grota do Inferno: a viewpoint reached on foot from the Mata do Canário car park, about 25 minutes

All suggestions are optional.

- Milícias and Pópulo beaches: 10 minutes from the center, for an hour of sun if the weather allows

- Mosteiros beach: a black sand beach, known as the best place on the island to see the sunset

Good to know: bring a towel and check the tide times before you go to Ferraria.

- Lunch: Cozido das Furnas, with meat and vegetables cooked for about 7 hours with volcanic heat. Try Vale das Furnas, casual, or Terra Nostra Restaurant, more upscale

All suggestions are optional.
- Day 9
Furnas: Terra Nostra and Dona Beija
.jpg)
Suggestion for the day: Thermal Pools in Furnas
- The Famous Terra Nostra Park: a large, landscaped garden in the center of Furnas, with a big thermal pool at its heart. The water is warm and orange-brown from the iron in the springs, so wear a dark or old swimsuit. Walk the shaded paths, tree ferns and ponds before or after your swim.
- Poça da Dona Beija: thermal pools in Furnas with several pools at different temperatures, so you can move from a warmer pool to a cooler one. Buy your ticket online in advance.
- Quenturas and Alameda gardens: in the center of Furnas, with a small tank of hot thermal water where you can dip your feet.
- A simple plan: Terra Nostra in the morning, and the Dona Beija pools later in the day.
Good to know: the iron in the water stains, so wear a dark or old swimsuit. Avoid wetting dyed blonde hair, which can turn orange. The hot springs are not recommended for people with heart problems or for pregnant women.

Frequently Asked Questions
This Azores Getaways package includes 29 nights on São Miguel in accommodations with a kitchenette, a rental car for the whole stay, round-trip flights and taxes and fees related to booking. Meals, tours and activities are not included. You pick up the car when you arrive, so you get around on your own schedule.
No. São Miguel is the largest island of the Azores, so a month lets you see it one area at a time: Sete Cidades and the west, Furnas and the center, the north coast and the Nordeste. There is room for slow days too, and rainy days are easy to fill with thermal pools, tea tastings and the museums of Ponta Delgada.
São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores, covering about 750 square kilometers (290 square miles). It is roughly 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 to 16 km (5 to 10 miles) wide, so one base reaches most of the island by car. The highest point is Pico da Vara, at 1,105 meters (3,625 feet). About 135,000 people live on the island, and the largest city is Ponta Delgada.
The São Miguel Self-Drive Guide was written by our team of Azorean locals, who live on the island and know it well, to guide your trip. It splits the island into five zones (Ponta Delgada, Sete Cidades and Mosteiros, Furnas and Vila Franca, Lagoa do Fogo, and Nordeste and Povoação), with the top sights, our restaurant recommendations and insider tips. It also has driving tips, useful apps, beaches and natural pools, and Google Maps routes for each day.
The accommodations are in Ponta Delgada and in other parts of São Miguel, all with a kitchenette and parking for your rental car. A kitchenette is a small kitchen for simple cooking, and the equipment varies by property. The exact property is confirmed at booking or shown on the next step after clicking See Dates and Prices.
The package price depends on the accommodation selected.
A rental car is included for the whole stay. You pick it up on arrival and return it at the end. The exact category is confirmed with your booking. Azores roads are often narrow, so a small or mid-size car is easier to handle. If you prefer an automatic transmission or an upgrade, ask the Azores Getaways team before you book or add it yourself during the booking process, subject to availability.
The rental includes basic third-party liability insurance, and depending on the car rental company, a collision damage waiver (CDW) may already be included. Even with CDW, most rentals have a mandatory excess, which is the amount you pay out of pocket if the car is damaged. We always recommend upgrading to the highest insurance level available. This can be arranged through the Azores Getaways team when you book with an agent.
You need a valid driver's license, and some rental companies ask that you have held it for 1 or 2 years. For visitors from outside the EU, an International Driving Permit is recommended, especially if your license is not in Portuguese or English. Carry both documents when you drive, and check the rental terms in your booking confirmation.
There are no toll roads on São Miguel, so there is nothing to pay on the road. Gas stations are found in the main towns and are fewer in rural areas, but you should not have any problem.
Large supermarkets such as Continente® and Pingo Doce® are in Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, Lagoa and Vila Franca do Campo, and small supermarkets are found all over the island. The Mercado da Graça and the Feira de Santana are the local markets, with local fruit, vegetables, cheese, fish and meat. With a kitchenette and a rental car, you can shop every few days and cook some of your own meals. Rural villages have fewer shops, so stock up before heading to quiet areas.
Daily breakfast is not included by default, but it can be added during the booking process if available, or you can contact the Azores Getaways team to prioritize it. Other meals are not included, and the kitchenette lets you cook your own.
Yes, round-trip flights are included. The package price varies depending on your departure airport. Other departure cities are available on request. Contact the Azores Getaways team before booking to discuss departure options. Checked luggage is not always included and depends on the airline and fare type. Confirm what is included and add luggage during the booking process. Seat selection and cabin class upgrades can be arranged as paid add-ons, subject to availability.
No. City taxes are not included and are paid directly at the accommodation. In the Azores, the tax is charged for a maximum of 7 nights, so on a 29-night stay you only pay it for the first 7 nights. Rates can change; the Azores Getaways team can confirm the current amount before you travel.
Tours and activities are not included, so you plan each day. The itinerary has suggestions for every area of the island, from Sete Cidades to the Nordeste. The Azores Getaways team can help arrange whale watching, tours and thermal pool visits before you travel.
Yes. The Azores are generally considered very safe for U.S. and Canadian travelers, with a low level of crime. The main risks are weather and roads: conditions can change quickly, so check forecasts and local advice. It's the traveler's responsibility to check their government's travel advisory before departure.
Yes, the package price is based on double occupancy, so solo travelers pay a single supplement. Contact the Azores Getaways team directly and we'll make it easy. You can also check solo pricing by changing guests from 2 to 1 in the booking calendar before clicking See Dates and Prices.
June to September is the warmest and driest season, with highs of about 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F) and blooming hydrangeas. April, May and October are milder, at roughly 17 to 21°C (63 to 70°F), with more rain. Winter is cooler and wetter, at about 14 to 17°C (57 to 63°F), and the weather changes quickly, so plan flexible days. The best season for whale watching is April to October, but trips run all year round, weather permitting.
Yes. The Azores Getaways team can adjust the number of nights or extend your stay on São Miguel. Contact the team with your preferred dates and we will adjust the itinerary, align your flights and confirm any additional costs. Rates can change with the season.
Ready to book a shorter stay?
Yes. The Azores Getaways team can add a few nights on another island, such as Terceira or Santa Maria, a short flight from São Miguel. Other islands are not included in this package, and adding them changes the price. Contact the team with your preferred dates.
The Azores are part of Portugal and the Schengen Area. US and Canadian passport holders do not currently need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. We recommend a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. ETIAS is not yet required and the EU has not confirmed a start date, so check the official ETIAS website before you travel. We will notify you once it does.
⚠️ Please note that if your itinerary includes a transit or layover in the United Kingdom, you will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel. Entry requirements can change, and it is the traveler's responsibility to verify current visa, passport, and transit requirements before departure through their government's official travel advisory website.
This package has no deposit option: the total price is paid in full when you book. Contact the Azores Getaways team if you have questions about payment before you book.
Travel insurance is not included but strongly recommended. US customers can add Allianz travel insurance directly during the booking flow. Canadian customers will need to arrange travel insurance independently.
The land portion of your package is refundable if cancelled at least 14 days before your travel date, and a cancellation fee applies. Airfare is non-refundable from the moment it is issued, but the Azores Getaways team will always check with the airline to explore options. Travel insurance with cancellation cover is strongly recommended. This summary does not replace the full terms and conditions of your booking, which we encourage you to read before confirming.
For general support, contact the Azores Getaways team at our regular number, available every day from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Outside those hours, an emergency number is provided in your trip documents. For local emergencies in the Azores, dial 112.
