Frequently Asked Questions
The Azores Getaways package includes round-trip international flights, all inter-island flights between Flores, Terceira, Pico, and São Miguel, 12 nights of hotel accommodation (3 Flores, 3 Terceira, 3 Pico, 3 São Miguel), a rental car on each island, 1 included experience (boat trip from Flores to Corvo Island with transfers to Caldeirão), and all taxes and fees related to the booking. Breakfast, guided tours, city taxes, and lunch on the Corvo day trip are not included.
The route covers 4 islands in the following order. You arrive in Flores for 3 nights, with a day trip to Corvo included. A direct inter-island flight takes you to Terceira (approximately 1 hour 5 minutes) for 3 nights. Another inter-island flight connects Terceira to Pico (approximately 35 minutes) for 3 nights. A final inter-island flight takes you to São Miguel (approximately 50 minutes) for the last 3 nights, where you fly home on departure day. All inter-island flights are included.
Yes. A separate rental car is included on each of the 4 islands. You pick up a car on arrival at each island's airport and return it before your inter-island flight. You do not take the same car between islands. The standard vehicle on each island is a compact manual car. Automatic transmission is available on request at an additional cost on each island. You will need a valid Canadian or US passport and driver's license at every pickup. There are also no toll roads in the Azores.
The rental on each island includes basic third-party liability insurance, and depending on the local car rental company, a collision damage waiver (CDW) may already be included. Even with CDW, most rentals have a mandatory excess. We always recommend upgrading to the highest insurance level available on each island. This can be arranged through the Azores Getaways team when booking.
Each rental car on this itinerary comes with the contact details of the local rental company on that island. In the event of a breakdown or accident, contact the rental company directly and they will advise on next steps. On smaller islands like Flores, response times may be longer than on São Miguel or Terceira. The Azores Getaways team is also available during office hours to help coordinate if needed. An emergency number is provided in your trip documents for situations outside office hours.
Automatic cars are available on São Miguel and Terceira and can be requested when booking. On Flores and Pico, availability is more limited due to the smaller size of the local rental fleets, but we will do our best to arrange one. Contact the Azores Getaways team before booking to confirm availability on your specific travel dates. An additional cost applies for automatic transmission on all islands.
Flores is a small island but the roads demand attention. Routes between villages and viewpoints are narrow. The landscape rewards drivers who take it slowly. Road surfaces are generally well maintained. You will not encounter heavy traffic. A compact car handles the island well, and the rental car included in this package is suited to the terrain. Allow more time between stops than you might expect from the distances on a map.
A boat trip from Flores to Corvo Island is included, with transfers to Caldeirão, a vast volcanic crater lake at the center of the island. The boat departs from Porto das Poças in Flores. Hotel pickup is not included. The crossing takes approximately 30 minutes. Dolphins are a common sighting on the way. Corvo has fewer than 400 inhabitants, one road, and no rental cars. Lunch on Corvo is not included. During winter months, sea conditions can affect boat operations and the trip may be cancelled for safety reasons. If cancelled, the Azores Getaways team will advise on alternatives.
Flores is the westernmost island in Europe and one of the least visited in the Azores. The landscape is dramatic: waterfalls that drop into emerald pools, hydrangea-lined roads, volcanic crater lakes, and a wild Atlantic coastline. Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro has over 20 cascading waterfalls above a single pool. Poço do Bacalhau has a 90-meter waterfall plunging directly into a lake. Tourist infrastructure is very limited. That is precisely what makes it worth the journey.
Pico is defined by two things: the mountain and the wine. Pico Mountain is the highest peak in Portugal at 2,351 meters (7,713 feet) and can be climbed in a day by fit hikers with advance booking. The Criação Velha vineyard landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where centuries-old basalt walls protect vines that produce a Verdelho white wine unlike anything grown on the mainland. Pico also has some of the best whale watching conditions in the Azores, with deep ocean channels just offshore. A day trip to Faial by ferry (30 minutes from Madalena) can be added as an optional extra.
The package offers curated accommodations across all four islands, with the package price varying depending on the property selected. In Terceira and São Miguel, options range from 3 to 4-star. In Flores, accommodation is very limited by nature and options include rural guesthouses and local properties that may not have an official star rating, chosen for character and authenticity. In Pico, similar rural and local properties are available alongside more conventional hotel options. Properties are not always in the town center, but with a rental car on each island that is never a problem. Exact options are shown when you click a date in the booking calendar. Contact the Azores Getaways team to discuss preferences before booking.
Breakfast is not included by default but can be added during the booking process (if available). Complimentary breakfast can be prioritized on request.
Parking is available at most properties in this package and is usually free, but conditions vary by property and should be confirmed during the booking process. On Flores and Pico, most rural properties and guesthouses have free on-site parking. Note that My Bed in Pico does not have on-site parking but has nearby parking available. On Terceira and São Miguel, parking is generally free at the properties included. You can check parking details for each property during the booking process. Contact the Azores Getaways team if you have any doubts and we will confirm the details for you.
Yes, round-trip international flights are included, along with all inter-island flights. The package price varies depending on your departure airport. Other departure cities are available on request. Contact the Azores Getaways team before booking to discuss options. Inter-island flights in the Azores typically include checked luggage. For international flights, checked luggage is not always included and depends on the airline and fare type, but can be added during the booking process at an additional cost.
No. City taxes are not included and are paid directly at each hotel on arrival or checkout.
No. All activities beyond the Corvo boat trip are optional and at additional cost. Popular add-ons include whale watching on Pico or São Miguel, hiking tours on Flores, Pico Mountain climb, wine tastings on Pico, a guided city tour of Angra do Heroísmo, and thermal pool experiences on São Miguel. Tours can be added during the booking process or at any point after booking.
Spring (April to May) is the best overall window, with mild temperatures around 18°C (64°F), lush green landscapes on Flores, and good conditions for the Corvo boat trip and inter-island connections. Summer (June to August) reaches 24°C (75°F), warmest and busiest, with the best conditions for hiking Pico Mountain, whale watching, and outdoor activities on all islands. Autumn (September to October) stays warm at around 22°C (72°F), quieter and excellent for hiking and wine harvest on Pico. Winter (November to March) is mild at around 15°C (59°F) but sea conditions on the western islands can affect the Corvo boat trip and inter-island connections.
Yes to all three. The Azores Getaways team can add nights on any island, include Faial, São Jorge, or other islands, or build a wider multi-island itinerary. If you are travelling solo, the package price is based on two travelers sharing a room and a single supplement applies. You can check solo pricing by changing the number of guests from 2 to 1 in the booking calendar before clicking See Dates and Prices. Contact the Azores Getaways team directly and we will make it easy.
The Azores are part of Portugal, consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in Europe for travelers, with no active conflicts and not affected by the current conflicts in Europe or elsewhere. Canadian and US passport holders do not currently need a visa for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. ETIAS, a pre-travel authorization for Schengen Area travel, is not yet mandatory. When it launches, we will contact you in advance.
The land portion of your package is refundable if cancelled at least 14 days before your travel date. Airfare is non-refundable from the moment it is issued, but the Azores Getaways team will always check with the airline to explore options. Travel insurance with cancellation cover is strongly recommended for a 12-night multi-island itinerary. This summary does not replace the full terms and conditions of your booking.
For general support, contact the Azores Getaways team at our regular number, available every day from 8:00 AM to 12:00 AM Azores Time. Outside office hours, an emergency number is provided in your trip documents. For local emergencies in the Azores, dial 112.
