Departing from your hotel in Horta, this scenic journey begins with an ascent to Espalamaca, where a stop at the Miradouro da Nossa Senhora da Conceição reveals sweeping views over Horta and the island’s northern coast. We then travel through the peaceful Vale dos Flamengos on our way to one of Faial’s most iconic natural wonders—the Caldeira.
Dominating the island’s center, the Caldeira is a massive volcanic crater, measuring around 2,000 meters across, 400 meters deep, and stretching seven kilometers around. Covered in lush greenery and home to a small central lagoon, it's a striking reminder of Faial's volcanic origins.
Our route then takes us north, through rolling green pastures fringed with vibrant hydrangeas, to a viewpoint overlooking the picturesque Fajã. From there, we head west to the parish of Capelo, where you’ll visit the fascinating Capelinhos Volcano site and the nearby School of Handicrafts, famous for its delicate straw-embroidered tulle.
We end the day at Monte da Guia, a volcanic cone that rises gracefully just outside Horta. Part of a protected landscape, this 145-meter-high formation offers a final moment of reflection, with panoramic views that perfectly capture the island's dramatic beauty.
