You need a valid driver's license, and some rental companies ask that you have held it for 1 or 2 years. For visitors from outside the EU, an International Driving Permit is recommended (not mandatory), especially if your license is not in Portuguese or English. Carry both documents when you drive, and check the rental terms in your booking confirmation.
There are no toll roads on Faial, Pico or Terceira, so there is nothing to pay on the road. Gas stations are found in the main towns on each island and are fewer in rural areas, so refuel before long drives.
