Terceira, São Jorge & São Miguel with Car

The Azores Getaways package includes round-trip flights, two domestic flights (Terceira to São Jorge, and São Jorge to São Miguel), 9 nights of hotel accommodation (3 in Terceira, 3 in São Jorge, 3 in São Miguel), one rental car per island, and all taxes and fees related to the booking. Guided tours, meals, and city taxes are not included.

Checked luggage is not always included and depends on the airline and fare type in your package. You can confirm what is included and add luggage during the booking process. Note that luggage allowances on the inter-island flights may differ from your transatlantic fare. The Azores Getaways team is always available to help if you prefer to arrange it with us directly.

Two domestic flights connect the islands on this itinerary, Terceira to São Jorge, and São Jorge to São Miguel, both included in your package. Exact departure times are confirmed at booking. All three airports are compact and easy to navigate independently. In case a flight is delayed or cancelled due to weather, the airline will rebook you on the next available departure. The Azores Getaways team is available if you need any help.

You fly between islands, so the same car can't cross. A rental car is waiting at the airport on each island when you land. The standard vehicle is a small or compact manual car. Automatic transmission is available on request, sometimes at an additional cost. You'll need a valid Canadian or US passport and driver's license at pickup. An International Driving Permit is optional but worth carrying as a backup.

The rental includes basic third-party liability insurance, and depending on the car rental company, a collision damage waiver (CDW) may already be included. Even with CDW, most rentals have a mandatory excess, which is the amount you are responsible for paying out of pocket if the car is damaged. We always recommend upgrading to the highest insurance level available, which eliminates or significantly reduces that excess and covers you across all risks. This can be arranged through the Azores Getaways team when booking with an agent.

There are no toll roads in the Azores. Parking is widely available at most hotels, viewpoints, and attractions, though it is not always free. In Ponta Delgada and Angra do Heroísmo, paid parking zones are marked with blue signs. You drive on the right, the same as in mainland Portugal. Roads are well-maintained, but some rural routes have narrow sections and hairpin turns. São Jorge's roads in particular can be steep and winding along the fajãs. Drive carefully in fog, which can appear quickly at higher elevations.

Ride-sharing apps are limited in the Azores. In São Miguel, it operates but it is still limited. Taxis are more widely available in Ponta Delgada and Angra do Heroísmo, though they become harder to find outside the main towns, and are especially limited on São Jorge. Public buses exist on the larger islands but are infrequent and don't serve most viewpoints or natural attractions. If driving is a concern on a specific day, contact the Azores Getaways team and we can suggest routes or add a guided experience with transport included.

This is an independent fly-and-drive package. The day-by-day itinerary is a set of suggestions, not a fixed programme. You decide what to visit each day, at your own pace. Yes. São Jorge, Pico, and Faial sit close enough to see each other across the water, known here as "the Triangle," and a round-trip ferry between them runs under €30. One day of your São Jorge stay is left open specifically so this is realistic to add, whether that's a hike partway up Pico Mountain, a visit to its UNESCO-listed vineyards, or a crossing to Horta's marina on Faial instead. This day trip is optional and not included in the package price. A guided version, typically including ferry tickets, a tour, and lunch, can be arranged, contact the Azores Getaways team.

The package offers hotels ranging from 3-star to 5-star on Terceira and São Miguel. In São Miguel, options range from boutique properties to well-known international brands. In Terceira, hotels are located in or close to Angra do Heroísmo. Hotels are not always in the city center, so some light walking may be needed. On São Jorge, options are more limited, with several properties unrated rather than star-classified. Facilities, services, and overall upkeep can vary significantly, and comfort levels may fall below what North American travelers typically expect. We recommend adjusting expectations for these more remote, island settings.

Facilities, services, and overall upkeep can vary significantly, and comfort levels may fall below what North American travelers typically expect. We recommend adjusting expectations for these more remote, island settings. Upgrade or alternative options can be requested, and exact hotels are confirmed at booking.

The accommodations on this package have parking available, but it's not always free. You can check whether parking is free during booking, or contact us to prioritize a hotel that offers it.

If you wish to take your rental car on the ferry, please mention this to our team, and they will check with the rental car company on your behalf. 

City taxes are not included and are paid directly at each hotel on arrival or checkout. The amount varies by island and is subject to change.

Daily breakfast is not included by default, but it can be added during the booking process if available, or you can contact us to prioritize it. Lunch and dinner are not included either, which gives you the room to eat where the locals eat. On Terceira, alcatra, beef slow-cooked in a clay pot, is the island specialty. On São Jorge, look for queijo São Jorge, the island's namesake cheese, along with clams caught along the island's fajãs, found nowhere else in the Azores. In Furnas on São Miguel, cozido is cooked in volcanic soil for six hours. All three are worth planning around.

Yes to all three. The Azores Getaways team can add nights, include optional tours, or build a wider multi-island itinerary, including Pico or Faial as overnight stays instead of a day trip. Additional costs may apply. If you're travelling solo, the package price is based on two travelers sharing a room and a single supplement applies. Contact the team directly and we'll make it easy. • Terceira: Angra do Heroísmo's UNESCO-listed historic center, Algar do Carvão, a volcanic chimney you descend into, Serra do Cume, with panoramic views over the island's checkered farmland, and Monte Brasil, an extinct volcano overlooking the city. 
• São Jorge: Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo, Fajã dos Cubres, and Pico da Esperança, the island's highest point. 
• São Miguel: Lagoa das Sete Cidades, a twin-lake volcanic crater, Lagoa do Fogo, and Furnas, where cozido is cooked underground in volcanic heat.

The Azores are part of Portugal and the European Union. Canadian and US passport holders do not currently need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. The Azores are a stable and safe destination with no active conflicts, not affected by the current conflicts in Europe or elsewhere. We recommend checking your government's official travel advisory before departure.

The land portion of your package is refundable if cancelled at least 14 days before your travel date. Airfare is non-refundable from the moment it is issued, but the Azores Getaways team will always check with the airline to explore options.
