Visitors can comfortably explore the island by car, enjoy its towns and natural attractions, and travel independently with confidence. As with any destination, we recommend taking normal travel precautions and safeguarding your personal belongings in public areas.

US and Canadian passport holders do not currently need a visa for Portugal for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is not yet mandatory for visa-exempt travelers entering the Schengen Area, including Portugal. When it becomes mandatory, we will notify you in advance. Entry requirements can change, and it is the traveler's responsibility to confirm the current requirements for their passport and travel dates before departure.
