Yes, driving in São Miguel is generally easy. Roads are well maintained, traffic is light, and distances are short. Your US driver's license is valid in the Azores, an International Driving Permit is not strictly required but is often recommended. The first rental car option shown is typically manual transmission, if you're not used to driving manual, we strongly recommend upgrading to automatic, contact the Azores Getaways team in advance to arrange this.

The rental car includes basic third-party liability insurance. Depending on the rental company, a collision damage waiver (CDW) may already be included, but most rentals still carry a mandatory excess. We always recommend upgrading to the highest insurance level available. This can be arranged through the Azores Getaways team when booking.

No. Whale and dolphin watching is an optional add-on at additional cost, it is not included in the package price even though it's featured as a highlight suggestion in the itinerary. Contact the Azores Getaways team to add it to your quote if you'd like to include it.

The land portion of your package is refundable if cancelled at least 14 days before your travel date. Airfare is non-refundable from the moment it is issued. São Miguel's mild subtropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Peak season (June to September) offers the warmest weather, around 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F), best for outdoor exploration. May and October bring lower rates and pleasant temperatures near 18 to 21°C (64 to 70°F) with fewer crowds. Winter months, around 14 to 17°C (57 to 63°F), are ideal if your focus is wellness, the island's geothermal hot springs are especially appealing when it's cooler outside.

Yes. The Azores, like the rest of Portugal, are consistently ranked among the safest destinations in Europe, with no active conflicts and low rates of violent crime. US passport holders do not currently need a visa for Portugal for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. ETIAS is not yet mandatory, when it becomes mandatory we will notify you in advance.
