1. A working farm, not a theme. Herdade do Ananás has grown pineapples on-site since 1958, not a hotel decorated around the idea.

2. A jacuzzi built inside the plantation. Guests can soak in warm water surrounded by the actual pineapple plants, something you won't find anywhere else on the island.

3. Close enough, far enough. About 1.8 miles from central Ponta Delgada, close enough for the city, far enough to feel like a genuinely different pace.

Breakfast and parking are both included at Herdade do Ananás.

• Portas da Cidade and downtown Ponta Delgada are about a 6-minute drive, the city gates, historic churches like São Sebastião/Matriz, and the farmers' market are all in reach.
• Sete Cidades, about 36 minutes away, is a volcanic crater holding a twin-lake complex, one of the island's most recognizable sights, with Vista do Rei as the main viewpoint. 
• The naturally heated ocean pools at Ponta da Ferraria are about 44 minutes away, best combined with a drive along the west coast.
• Furnas and Lagoa do Fogo are further out but worth a full day, Furnas for its geothermal activity and the cozido stew cooked underground, Lagoa do Fogo for the crater lake viewpoint and Caldeira Velha's thermal pools nearby.
• We also recommend whale watching, one of the best experiences on the island, available as an optional add-on.
