With a Car: Western Coast Focus
Drive from Cais do Pico west toward Madalena and cover the UNESCO vineyard coast, Gruta das Torres, and Cela Bar. This is essentially the same day trip plan as from Faial, with the difference that you arrive on the north coast rather than the west. Allow 30 to 40 minutes driving time between Cais do Pico and Madalena.
The UNESCO vineyard zone and Gruta das Torres are both within reach of Madalena. A combined visit to both sites is a realistic day itinerary.

This option is significantly more limited than a car-based day trip, but works if the ferry schedule does not give you enough time to collect a car in Madalena and return to the coast.
Is a Day Trip Enough for Pico?
Honestly, no, for most travellers. Pico is a large island (444 km²) and its main highlights are spread between the western coast, north coast, south coast, and the mountain interior. A day trip covers one or two things well. If you are already on São Jorge and have a strict itinerary, a day trip makes sense. If you have flexibility, spending two or three nights on Pico and doing São Jorge as the day trip (rather than the reverse) gives you a more complete experience of both islands.
