Gruta das Torres is Portugal's largest lava tube, formed approximately 1,500 years ago during an eruption at Cabeço Bravo, part of Pico Island's Mountain Volcanic Complex. Guided tours take visitors through 450 meters of the cave over roughly one hour, with geological formations that include lava stalactites, lava balls, striated walls, and ropy lava flows.

What Is Gruta das Torres?
Gruta das Torres formed around 1,500 years ago when lava from Cabeço Bravo (a volcanic vent within Pico's Mountain Volcanic Complex) flowed downhill and created a tunnel as its outer surface cooled and hardened while molten rock continued moving inside. When the eruption ended, the interior drained, leaving the hollow tube that visitors walk through today.
The cave is Portugal's longest lava tube and one of the most significant volcanic geological features in the Azores. It sits on the western part of Pico Island, roughly between the towns of Madalena and Lajes.
The Visitors Centre that manages the cave has received architectural recognition: it was a finalist in the Portuguese selection for the V Ibero-American Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in 2006, was nominated for the Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award in 2007, and won first place in the Tektónica National Award of the Architects Order in 2009.
The Tour
Guided tours cover a 450-meter section of the cave and last approximately one hour. All tours are guided; independent exploration is not permitted. Guided tours are available in English and Portuguese.
Inside the cave, the temperature holds at an average of 15°C with a range of roughly 3°C either way, and humidity runs between 70% and 100%. It is consistently cool and damp. The cave is dimly lit, and the terrain underfoot is volcanic rock.
Geological features visible on the tour include:
- Lava stalactites and stalagmites formed as lava dripped and cooled in place
- Side benches where lava flow levels are marked on the walls
- Lava balls rounded by rolling movement during the eruption
- Striated walls showing the directional flow of ancient lava
- Ropy lava formations created as the surface of slow-moving lava wrinkled under its own tension
All safety gear is provided at the Visitors Centre: disposable head caps, helmets, and flashlights. Nothing additional needs to be rented.

⚠️ BEFORE YOU GO
- Minimum age: 5 years old. Children aged 5 to 12 must be accompanied by an adult and must walk independently. They cannot be carried through the cave.
- Minimum group size: 3 participants for a guided tour to proceed.
- Groups over 15 people must arrange their visit directly with the Environmental Centre.
- Footwear: Closed walking shoes suitable for rocky terrain are mandatory.
- Clothing: Bring a light waterproof jacket. The cave is 15°C and humid year-round.
- Claustrophobia: The cave is dimly lit and enclosed. This is worth considering before booking if you or your group have concerns.
- Pregnancy: The tour is not recommended for women in the second half of pregnancy.
- Reduced mobility: Contact the Environmental Centre in advance. The volcanic rock terrain is uneven.
The cave is open year-round. Because the interior temperature stays at roughly 15°C regardless of the season, there is no better or worse time of year to visit from a geological or comfort standpoint. Outdoor conditions on Pico vary more by season, so pairing the cave with other activities in summer gives more flexibility.
Getting There
Gruta das Torres is located on the western side of Pico Island, roughly midway between Madalena (the main port) and the western coast. It is accessible by car; the drive from Madalena takes around 20 minutes. A rental car is the most practical way to reach it, as public transport on Pico is limited.
The Visitors Centre has parking and handles all equipment, tickets, and guided tours on site.
