Where to Stay by Area

Santa Cruz das Flores is the practical choice: flights land here, ferries depart from here, the supermarket and market are here, and Hotel Servi-Flor and the main campground are both in town. If you want flexibility and amenities, base yourself here.

Fajã Grande is the better choice if the waterfalls and western coast are your priority. Poço do Bacalhau and Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro are both within 10 minutes by car. The campground is a walkable distance from the pools. There is a small restaurant (A Tasca do Porto) but no supermarket, so plan accordingly.

Lajes das Flores makes sense for travelers doing the south coast trail or wanting a quieter town feel. It has a harbor, one good restaurant, and the Lajes campground.

Most travelers base in one place for the full stay and drive the island each day. A full circuit of Flores takes under two hours by car, so no part of the island is genuinely hard to reach from any of the main bases.

Practical Booking Notes

Book summer early. July and August accommodation in Flores fills quickly, particularly small guesthouses in Fajã Grande. For travel in those months, booking by March or April is not excessive.

A rental car is required. There is no meaningful public transport. Wherever you stay, you will need a car to reach trailheads, viewpoints, and the main natural sights. Book that at the same time as accommodation. Supply in Flores is also limited and automatics in particular run out fast.

Campground reservations. Flores campgrounds can be reserved directly with each park or through the municipality. Peak summer without a reservation carries real risk of no availability, especially in Santa Cruz and Fajã Grande.

Self-catering. If you are camping or renting a house, the municipal market in Santa Cruz das Flores is worth visiting for local cheese, fish, and vegetables. The supermarket stocks basics. For anything specific, buy in Santa Cruz before heading to the west side of the island.
