The two established local operators — WestCanyon Turismo Aventura and Ocidental Adventures — between them cover everything from a 2-hour introduction on the east coast to a full-day advanced descent into Poço do Bacalhau, one of the most famous waterfalls in Portugal.

The terrain that makes Flores exceptional for waterfalls is the same terrain that makes it exceptional for canyoning: year-round water flow, basalt gorges, and vertical drops ranging from 9 to 115 meters across the island's different canyon systems.

Canyoning Baptism (Beginner — 2h30)

The shortest and most accessible route on the island, run by Ocidental Adventures on the east coast. Five rappels, with the longest at 9 meters. Easy accessibility and a natural pace designed for people who have never done anything like this before.

The route finishes at a natural pool that looks out over the Atlantic and the Alagoa islets — a setting that makes it worth doing even for experienced canyoneers who want a relaxed half-day option. Duration is two and a half hours from start to finish.

Além Inferior / Level 1 (Beginner to Easy Intermediate — 4h)

The classic Flores introduction and the route most operators run as their standard tour. Além Inferior (also called Ilhéus Inferior) follows the Ribeira dos Ilhéus through the only true gorge-style canyon in the Azores — narrow basalt walls, deep pools, and a different kind of enclosed terrain from the open-stream routes elsewhere on the island.

Seven rappels, maximum 16 meters, with natural slides and jumps mixed in between the technical sections. The route is designed to work for first-timers but has enough variety — slides, jumps, and rappels — to feel genuinely active rather than just instructional.

Both WestCanyon and Ocidental Adventures run this route. Ocidental Adventures' departure starts at 8:30 AM.

Ilhéus Médio / Level 2 (Intermediate — 4h30)

The middle section of the Ilhéus system, run as a standalone route for participants who have already done some canyoning. The approach follows part of the hiking trail that connects Ponta Delgada to the canyon entrance. More technical than Além Inferior throughout, with eight rappels and a 45-meter maximum drop.

WestCanyon rates this level at 4 out of 5 on their interest scale. The landscape context at this level is noticeably different from the lower section, with less enclosed gorge character and more open terrain above longer drops.

Ilhéus Médio + Inferior Combined / Level 3 (Intermediate to Advanced — Full Day)

Both operators offer the middle and lower sections as a combined route for groups who want a longer day. The combined route starts at the top of the Ilhéus Médio section and runs all the way through Além Inferior, covering both the open upper terrain and the narrow gorge of the lower section in one descent.

This is the most complete version of the Ilhéus system and gives the clearest sense of the full range of what the canyon has to offer.

Canyoning Poço do Bacalhau / Level 4 (Advanced — 7h)

The most demanding named route on the island, run by Ocidental Adventures. Thirteen rappels, with the longest at 115 meters, over a full seven-hour day starting at 9 AM in summer.

The defining feature of this route is where it finishes: after descending through multiple rappels, you reach the top of Poço do Bacalhau — one of the most photographed waterfalls in the Azores — and look directly down over the west coast of Flores from the lip of the drop. The view at that point is described by the operator as one with a "breathtaking view over the west coast of the island."

The 45-minute approach hike is rated moderate. This route is not offered to beginners or participants without significant prior canyoning experience.

Canyoning Barrosas (Advanced — 7h + Boat Tour)

The most distinctive route on Flores, run by Ocidental Adventures. Nine rappels, maximum 23 meters, with natural slides and jumps throughout — but the defining feature is not the canyon itself. The Barrosas route finishes in the sea, with Corvo Island visible from the water, and the descent ends with a boat tour through the Galo Caves and the Cathedral, the sea cave system along Flores' coastline.

This combination — descending a canyon that exits into the Atlantic, then moving directly into a sea cave tour — is not something most canyoning destinations anywhere can offer. The 45-minute approach hike brings you to Ponta Delgada harbor on the north coast.

Both WestCanyon and Ocidental Adventures include the following in all canyoning tours: certified local guide (English, Portuguese, and Spanish), full personal equipment (wetsuit, boots, helmet, harness), insurance, snack during the activity, and photos.

Best Time for Canyoning in Flores

The main season runs from April through October. June through September offers the warmest water temperatures and the most reliable conditions for routes that finish near or in the sea.

July and August are the busiest months. The Poço do Bacalhau and Barrosas routes run at 9 AM in summer (May to September) and 9:30 AM from October to April.

Some operators reduce winter departures between November and March. Confirm availability directly when booking outside the main season. Peak summer spots fill quickly — booking at least a week ahead in July and August is advisable for the more in-demand routes.
