Your Azores Trip Itinerary

- Day 1Arrival in Graciosa Island

Welcome to My Peaceful Getaway! The moment I land in Graciosa, something in me shifts—I breathe deeper, move slower, and smile more. After picking up the rental car, I like to ease into the island’s rhythm with a gentle stroll through Santa Cruz da Graciosa, the heart of this little gem I call my escape.
Here’s how I would love to spend my arrival afternoon (suggestion):
- I always begin at Praça da Liberdade, the main square. It’s the perfect spot to feel the island’s pace—quiet, welcoming, and never in a hurry. From there, I walk down to the Santa Cruz Fort, a 17th-century stone sentinel watching over the sea. It’s one of my favorite places to pause and take in the views.
- The harbor promenade is just steps away, where fishing boats gently bob in the water and pastel houses frame the shoreline. There’s something incredibly soothing about that walk. I always make time for the Santa Cruz Museum—small, but filled with stories and beautiful artifacts that paint a picture of the island’s past.
- And before heading to dinner or back to the hotel, I find a quiet bench at the Jardim Municipal. Sitting among the flowers, hearing birdsong and soft chatter from nearby cafés, feels like the perfect welcome to Graciosa.
- Day 2Graciosa Island

Suggestion for the day: My Graciosa Highlights – A Personal Favorite
If you're spending the day in Graciosa, here's how I'd do it. This little island is full of charm, and this itinerary brings together some of my favorite spots—relaxed, scenic, and so authentically Azorean. Here’s what I wouldn’t miss:
- Queijadas da Graciosa: I always start the day with a stop at the Queijadas da Graciosa factory. These traditional pastries are a local treasure—sweet, delicate, and best enjoyed fresh from the source.
- Graciosa’s Windmills: Right after, I love taking a walk to see the windmills nearby. They’re so unique to the island, and there’s something really peaceful about their old-world charm.
- Baleia Islets: From there, I head to the coast to see the Ilhéu da Baleia. Shaped just like a whale (seriously!), it’s a quiet spot that always makes me pause and take in the beauty around me.
- Ponta da Barca Lighthouse: One of my absolute favorite views is from Farol da Ponta da Barca. It’s the tallest lighthouse in the Azores, and standing there with the sea stretching out in front of you? Just wow.
- Porto Afonso: To wrap things up, I like to spend some time at Porto Afonso. With its lava-rock swimming pools and rugged coastline, it’s the perfect way to end the day—calm, refreshing, and totally Graciosa.
- Day 3Graciosa Island

My Suggestion for the Day: Graciosa’s Geological Wonders
If you’re into volcanic landscapes and natural beauty, this itinerary is for you. Graciosa may be small, but its geological treasures are awe-inspiring. Here’s how I’d spend the day discovering them:
- Furna do Enxofre: I always start with a visit to Furna do Enxofre. It’s a massive volcanic cavern hidden inside the island’s caldera—stepping into it feels like entering another world. Don’t miss the underground lake and the otherworldly stalactites and stalagmites. A guided visit makes all the difference!
- Caldeira da Graciosa: After exploring the cave, I love walking around the rim of the caldera. The views of Graciosa’s interior are breathtaking—worth the gentle hike.
- Furna da Maria Encantada: This smaller cave has its kind of magic. There’s a local legend tied to it, and whether you’re into folklore or just cool rock formations, it’s worth the stop.
- Termas do Carapacho: Time to unwind! I always make time for a soak at Termas do Carapacho. These thermal baths are right by the sea and are known for their healing properties. Nothing better after a day of exploring underground!
- Miradouro do Carapacho: To finish the day, I head up to Miradouro do Carapacho. The view over the ocean and surrounding islets is stunning—especially at sunset.
- Day 4Flight to São Miguel Island

Welcome to my hometown, São Miguel Island! A rental car is included for your convenience.
My suggestion for the day: Explore Downtown Ponta Delgada
On your arrival day, let’s dive into the heart of São Miguel by exploring Ponta Delgada, the island's main city. It’s a place that draws you in with its charming streets, vibrant atmosphere, and the fact that it serves as the economic pulse of the entire archipelago. Ponta Delgada truly feels like stepping into a piece of Europe, with cobblestone streets, inviting sidewalk cafes, and a thriving culinary scene.
Don’t Miss:
- Stroll Through Ponta Delgada’s Cobblestone Streets: I recommend starting your São Miguel adventure with a leisurely walk through the city’s charming streets. Take in the stunning architecture, from historic buildings to colorful homes. Pop into local shops and just soak up the lively atmosphere around you.
- Portas da Cidade: Make sure to visit the iconic Portas da Cidade (City Gates). This landmark is the symbolic gateway to Ponta Delgada’s rich history and vibrant culture—an essential stop for any newcomer.
- Matriz Church: Take some time to visit the impressive Matriz Church. It’s a stunning example of Azorean religious architecture, located right in the city center. You’ll feel the island’s history and spiritual charm here.
- Pineapple Paradise: For something truly unique, drive to a nearby pineapple plantation. Discover the secrets behind São Miguel’s famous pineapples, see the plants up close, and treat yourself to a refreshing pineapple-based snack!
- Day 5São Miguel Island

Suggestion for the Day: Sete Cidades & Lagoa do Fogo
This island is truly a gem in the Azores, and today, I want to take you to two of its most captivating spots: Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo. You’ll be surrounded by volcanic landscapes, serene lakes, and charming villages as you experience the magic of this island.
- Sete Cidades (A Realm of Twin Lakes): Let’s begin our adventure in Sete Cidades, a village nestled in the heart of a vast volcanic crater. As we descend into the caldera, you’ll be awestruck by the view of Lagoa das Sete Cidades, a mesmerizing twin-lake complex. This spot is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal and one of the most iconic images of the Azores—you’ll see why it’s so special the moment you arrive.
- Mosteiros & Ferraria: After Sete Cidades, I recommend a visit to Mosteiros, a picturesque village known for its stunning sunsets. It’s a photographer’s dream, and I’m sure you’ll want to capture every moment. As we explore the western region, we’ll stop by Ferraria, where you can relax in the unique ocean thermal baths. These are best enjoyed during low tide when the warm spring water mixes with the ocean, creating an incredibly relaxing and luxurious experience.
Next, let’s head to one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots on São Miguel—Lagoa do Fogo. This place is truly a hidden gem, and the views are incredible, especially on a clear day. Be sure to check the weather forecast before we go up the mountain, as the best experience comes when the skies are cloud-free.
- Lagoa do Fogo (A Crater Lake of Tranquility): Lagoa do Fogo, which translates to “Lagoon of Fire,” is a crater lake located at the center of the island. It’s tucked away atop the stunning Pico da Barrosa and is part of a Protected Natural Reserve. The tranquility here is a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life—perfect for recharging and connecting with nature.
- Caldeira Velha Hot Springs: Afterward, I’ll take you to Caldeira Velha, a natural monument that’s not just about the divine thermal pools (although they’re a highlight!). The lush, tropical vegetation surrounding the area will make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. It’s truly one of the most magical places on the island.
- Ribeira Grande: On our way back, we’ll stop in Ribeira Grande, a charming town on the northern part of São Miguel. You can wander through its historic center, relax on the black-sand Santa Bárbara Beach, or go for a hike in the countryside. Don’t forget to try the fresh seafood—it’s a treat you won’t want to miss.
- Day 6São Miguel Island

My Suggestion for the Day: Furnas & Tea Plantations
I’m so excited to take you through one of my favorite spots on São Miguel—Furnas Valley! It’s the heart of the island’s geothermal activity, and there’s so much to discover here, from bubbling calderas to thermal pools and charming parks. Let’s dive into this unforgettable experience!
- Lagoa das Furnas: We’ll start with a visit to Lagoa das Furnas, a peaceful lake surrounded by beautiful hiking trails. I love strolling here, taking in the scenery, and admiring the stunning Neo-Gothic Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias nearby. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area.
- Cozido das Furnas Lunch: Next, we’ll enjoy the famous Cozido das Furnas. This traditional Portuguese stew is cooked in volcanic fumaroles—an experience you can’t get anywhere else. Trust me, the flavors are incredible, and it’s one of those local traditions that’s a must-try!
- Caldeiras das Furnas: After lunch, let’s explore the heart of Furnas town. Here, you’ll find close to 30 active calderas and fumaroles. The strong sulfur smell is part of the charm, and it’s amazing to see the natural geothermal energy at work all around us
- Terra Nostra Park: Now it’s time to relax at Terra Nostra Park. This place is incredible! From the lush botanical gardens to the famous thermal pools, it’s one of my favorite spots to unwind. A soak in the warm waters is the perfect way to relax and enjoy the beauty of São Miguel.
- Poça da Dona Beija: If you're in the mood for more thermal relaxation, I recommend Poça da Dona Beija. With six thermal pools, each at a different temperature, it’s easy to find your perfect spot. It’s a truly peaceful and unique experience.
- Gorreana Tea Plantations: To end the day, let’s head to the Gorreana Tea Plantations. I always love walking through the tea fields here, breathing in the fresh, earthy scent, and learning about the history of Azorean tea. It’s a beautiful and peaceful place to finish our adventure.
- Day 7São Miguel Island

My Suggestion for the Day: Whale Watching & Farewell Dinner
For your last day in the Azores, I’ve planned something truly special—a Whale & Dolphin Watching experience followed by a delicious farewell dinner. It’s the perfect way to cap off your trip and soak in the natural beauty of the islands before you leave.
- Whale & Dolphin Watching: Get ready for an unforgettable adventure at sea! The Azores is one of the world’s best whale-watching destinations, and today, we’ll set sail on crystal-clear waters surrounded by stunning volcanic peaks. Imagine dolphins leaping from the waves and the magnificent spout of a sperm whale in the distance. The Azores is home to over 20 species of whales and dolphins, and depending on the time of year, you might even see migrating giants like Blue Whales or humpbacks breaching. It’s a truly magical experience, and you’ll get to witness the wonders of the marine life that makes this region so special.

Whether you’re looking for something delicious or a handcrafted treasure, you’ll find the perfect keepsake here in the Azores.
