The Trail

Walk through an otherworldly landscape of black volcanic rock and twisted lava formations left by a massive eruption in 1761. The trail cuts through dense native forest before emerging onto open lava fields where the ground is still jagged and raw. It's one of the most unique hikes in the Azores.

The Trail

Climb to São Miguel's hidden gem, a pristine crater lake protected as a nature reserve and surrounded by steep volcanic walls. The trail is challenging but worth every step. At the top, you're rewarded with views of turquoise water, untouched beaches, and the Atlantic stretching to the horizon.

After the Hike

Enjoy a picnic lunch with views of the lake, then head to Caloura, a quiet fishing village on the southern coast. Stroll the harbor, watch local fishermen bring in the day's catch, and soak in the Atlantic breeze before heading back.

Vista do Rei Trail: A Scenic Walk Along the Rim of Sete Cidades

The Trail

This is a panoramic ridge walk of approximately 7–8 km (4–5 miles), following wide dirt paths and open crater-edge trails. You begin near the viewpoint area and continue along the rim, where the terrain is mostly even, with gentle inclines. On one side: the crater and lakes below. On the other: rolling green hills stretch toward the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, your guide shares stories about the volcanic formation of the island, local farming traditions, and the legends behind the twin lakes. The views change constantly as you walk. One moment, you are looking down at the lakes. Next, you are gazing toward the coastline of São Miguel. There are several natural stopping points to rest, take photos, and simply enjoy the silence of this highland landscape.

After the Hike

After completing the trail, the experience continues with a stop in the village of Sete Cidades, where you can relax and enjoy a local lunch in a calm, authentic setting.

The Trail

The walk around Lagoa das Furnas covers approximately 9–10 km (5–6 miles) on mostly flat, well-maintained paths. You’ll follow the shoreline of the lake, where steam rises gently from volcanic vents along the water’s edge. The scenery is green, peaceful, and unlike anywhere else on the island. Along the way, you’ll see the geothermal areas where local restaurants prepare Cozido das Furnas underground — slowly cooked for hours using natural volcanic heat. The terrain is gentle, with minimal elevation gain. No scrambling. No narrow cliff paths. Just steady walking at a comfortable pace, with time for photos and rest.

Beyond the Hike

• Gorreana Tea Plantation: Before or after the walk (depending on routing), you’ll visit Gorreana — Europe’s oldest tea plantation. Learn how tea has been produced here since 1883, stroll through the fields if conditions allow, and enjoy a tasting.

• Cozido das Furnas Lunch: You’ll sit down to a traditional Cozido meal — meats and vegetables slow-cooked underground using geothermal heat. It’s hearty, authentic, and one of the most unique culinary traditions in Portugal.

• Thermal Bath at Terra Nostra Park: The day ends inside the beautiful botanical gardens of Terra Nostra Park. Here, you can soak in the warm, iron-rich thermal pool — naturally heated and deeply relaxing.
