The historical center of the city of Velas, the main of the island, is picturesque and quiet and there’s a clear view of Mount Pico whenever you look to the sea. Stroll around downtown Velas, where the majority of the restaurants and bars are located, and visit the Jardim da República, a green oasis in the city center.

As a matter of fact, in the summer cows swim all the way there and then graze freely in the islet. The village of Topo also has a cheese factory and it’s quite well known for that.

The Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo is one of the most mysterious and coveted zones of São Jorge, and getting there is an adventure by itself. Either you choose to go for a hike or rent a moto to get down faster. Once you get down there, the view up will surprise you, as well as from the several viewpoints down as you start to approach it.

Another top sight of São Jorge is the beautiful Fajã dos Cubres, which you can access by car. From the above viewpoint it is possible to sightsee not only this fajã, but also the lake of the Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo a bit further.
