ACCOMMODATION GUIDE

Pico Island has a small but well-matched accommodation scene. Properties here tend to be small-scale, independent, and set in the landscape rather than separated from it. There are no large resort hotels on the island, which suits the kind of travel Pico is built for.

Main base: Madalena (west coast)  |  Car hire: Essential  |  Ferry to Faial: From Madalena, ~30 min

Pico is the kind of island where your accommodation matters more than on islands with a full range of infrastructure. There are three main towns, each on a different coast, and the choice of where to base yourself determines which activities are close to hand and which require a drive.

This guide covers the main areas of the island, the properties worth knowing about, and the practical considerations for planning where to stay.

Where to Base Yourself on Pico Island

Madalena, on the west coast, is the main hub. It has the ferry terminal connecting to Horta on Faial Island (roughly 30 minutes by boat), the most concentration of accommodation, restaurants, and services, and immediate proximity to the UNESCO vineyard zone. Pico Mountain is directly behind the town and visible from most of the west coast. If you are only spending a few days on Pico, Madalena is the most practical base.

Lajes do Pico, on the south coast, is the island's second town and historically its most important port. The Museu dos Baleeiros (Whalers' Museum) is here, as are the whale watching departure points and the airport. Staying in Lajes suits travelers focused on whale watching or the south coast trails. It is roughly 43 km from Madalena by the main coastal road.

São Roque do Pico, on the north coast, is a quieter base with access to the natural pools and the northern hiking trails. The Estrada Transversal, the road that crosses the island's interior and gives access to the Lagoa do Capitão trailhead, starts from the São Roque side.

The north coast beyond São Roque is the most rural and remote part of the island. Accommodation here is sparse, but it exists, and it offers the most complete sense of Pico's landscape away from the main towns.

A hire car is necessary regardless of where you stay. Bus connections on Pico are limited and do not cover most of the island's trails or attractions.

Featured Accommodations

Lava Homes

Lava Homes is a collection of 14 restored historic cottages and bungalows in the village of Santo Amaro on the north coast, roughly 20 km from São Roque do Pico. The original stone buildings were reconstructed and retrofitted as eco-friendly self-catering units while keeping the form and materials of the original structures. Each unit sits within the village rather than in a resort complex, with the Atlantic directly below.

Santo Amaro is a small coastal village of around 300 residents. It has natural rock pools and a picnic area, and the surrounding countryside is typical of Pico's north coast: volcanic pasture, stone walls, and sea. The location is genuinely remote by Azorean standards. It suits travelers who want to be off the tourist circuit and who have a car.

Capacity is 14 units across different configurations. Ocean views are standard. The properties are built and managed with environmental conservation in mind.

Aldeia da Fonte Eco Resort

Aldeia da Fonte is Pico's most developed resort-style property, set in the parish of Silveira in the Lajes do Pico municipality on the south coast. The accommodation occupies a cluster of traditional Azorean stone houses within a tropical garden, with direct access to the Atlantic and a swimming pool on site. Lajes do Pico town is 5 minutes by car; the airport is approximately 40 minutes from Madalena.

The stone house village format means the property feels more like a hamlet than a hotel. It is one of the few places on the island that offers resort-adjacent amenities (pool, gardens, direct sea access) alongside the character of a traditional Azorean rural property.

This is the natural choice for travelers staying in the south, particularly those doing whale watching out of Lajes.

Vinhas do Calhau Aparthotel

Vinhas do Calhau is a modern aparthotel complex in Madalena, near the Criação Velha area within the UNESCO vineyard zone. The apartments are contemporary in design and finish, and the location provides something that few properties on any island can offer: a direct view of the vineyard landscape from the property and Pico Mountain as the backdrop.

The combination of a central location, vineyard views, and modern self-catering units makes Vinhas do Calhau one of the more practical choices for travelers who want to be close to Madalena's services while also being immersed in the landscape that defines western Pico.

Adegas do Pico

Adegas do Pico is a set of 12 traditional stone-built cottages in the village of Prainha, in the São Roque do Pico municipality on the north coast. The property is small-scale and deliberately low-key. The cottages use local stone construction, and the village setting gives a genuine sense of Pico's rural character.

Prainha is a working agricultural village, not a tourist development. Staying here means being away from the main towns while having access to the north coast trails, the natural pools at São Roque, and the Estrada Transversal. It suits travelers who want a quieter, more immersive experience over convenience.

The name connects to the island's wine heritage: adegas are the traditional wine cellars central to Pico's viticulture culture.

Alma do Pico Nature Residence

Alma do Pico ("soul of Pico") is a nature residence in Madalena offering modern cottages with views across the Atlantic and toward Pico Mountain. It is one of two main Madalena-area properties on this list, with a quieter, forested setting compared to the aparthotel format of Vinhas do Calhau.

The emphasis is on the relationship between the accommodation and the surrounding landscape. Ocean views and mountain views are standard from the property. It is well positioned for travelers who want a peaceful base in the west of the island while remaining close to Madalena's ferry connections and the UNESCO vineyard zone.

Practical Tips

Book early for summer. Pico has limited accommodation overall. July and August fill up quickly, particularly for properties in Madalena and on the south coast. If you are planning to climb the mountain (open July 1 to September 30), book accommodation well in advance.

Hire a car at the same time as your accommodation. There is no reliable public transport for most of the island's trails, viewpoints, or the east coast. Car hire is available at the airport and in Madalena. Book ahead in peak season.

Consider the ferry to Faial. If you are visiting the central triangle (Pico, Faial, São Jorge), Madalena is the natural base. The ferry to Horta on Faial runs frequently and takes around 30 minutes, making a day trip to Faial easy.

Minimum stay requirements. Many of Pico's smaller cottage properties require a minimum stay of 2 to 3 nights, particularly in high season. Check before booking if you are planning a short stop.

Where to eat near your accommodation. Restaurant options outside Madalena and Lajes do Pico are limited. If staying in rural north coast properties like Lava Homes or Adegas do Pico, self-catering is the more practical option for most meals. Buy local seafood and island produce in the market in Madalena or São Roque.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I stay on Pico Island?

Madalena, on the west coast, is the most practical base for most visitors. It has the ferry to Faial, the closest access to the UNESCO vineyard zone and Pico Mountain, and the most accommodation and dining options on the island. Lajes do Pico on the south coast suits travelers focused on whale watching. More rural options on the north coast suit those who want a quieter, more remote experience.

Are there hotels on Pico Island?

Pico's accommodation is mainly small-scale: cottage complexes, aparthotels, eco resorts, and nature residences. There are no large international hotel chains on the island. Properties tend to be independently run and are often set directly in the landscape, with views of Pico Mountain, the UNESCO vineyards, or the coast.

How far in advance should I book accommodation on Pico Island?

For July and August, book at least 3 to 4 months in advance. Pico has limited accommodation capacity and fills up quickly in summer, particularly properties in Madalena and those near the whale watching departures in Lajes. For travel outside peak season (June, September, October), 4 to 6 weeks is usually sufficient.

Do I need a car if I stay in Madalena?

Madalena itself is walkable, but most of Pico's trails, viewpoints, and attractions require a car. There is no reliable public transport network for visitors. Car hire is available at the airport (near Madalena) and in Madalena town. Book at the same time as your accommodation, particularly in summer.

Can I visit Faial from Pico Island?

Yes. The ferry from Madalena to Horta on Faial Island takes approximately 30 minutes and runs multiple times daily. Faial is a practical day trip from a Pico base, and the two islands are often combined in central-group itineraries along with São Jorge.

How many days should I spend on Pico Island?

Three to five days is the typical stay. One full day for the mountain (if climbing), one day for whale watching and the south coast, one day for the UNESCO vineyard zone and the Gruta das Torres lava cave, and optional additional days for hiking or the north and east coasts. Five days gives a more relaxed pace and time for the less-visited parts of the island.
