Embark on a journey of discovery and explore São Miguel Island! With our expert travel guide it's easy to unlock the secrets of Sete Cidades, one of Portugal's most fascinating destinations.
1. Lagoa das Sete Cidades
This awe-inspiring landscape of Sete Cidades is the Azores’ most famed postcard image. In fact, Lagoa das Sete Cidades is officially listed as one of the “7 Wonders of Portugal.” And the absolute best spot to fully appreciate the breathtaking views over the mystical blue and green lakes is—by far—Vista do Rei.
2. Walkthrough a hydrangeas covered road
After marveling at the views from the top, descend this scenic, hydrangeas-covered road until you reach the charming village below. Instagram-perfect, right?
3. Sports
Opt for an active SUP experience amid idyllic scenery or appreciate the beauty by land on a bike. Other experiences you can have include horseback riding, bike rides or even riding a moto and so much more!
4. Lots of hiking
Discover under-the-radar lakes and verdant valleys by venturing yourself out through one of the many hiking trails in the area. We promise you’ll see beauty as far as the eye can see.
5. São Nicolau Church
Pause to appreciate the incredible architecture of Igreja de São Nicolau, one of the most lovely chapels in the Azores.
6. Boca do Inferno Viewpoint
While you're there, make your way over to the Boca do Inferno for some jaw-dropping 360 views overlooking the Lagoa do Canario and the other lagoons below, Sete Cidades village, and an expansive view of the Atlantic beyond the ridge of the crater.
7. Spot all of the different lakes
There are (amazingly) 11 lakes in total around Sete Cidades, but they can only be seen from certain angles at the different miradouros (viewpoints) in the area.
8. Drive through the Cumeeiras road
Caution: we only recommend taking this road if you’re on a tour with a local guide.
Drive literally on top of a volcanic crater and get amazed by the views down! The European Rally Championship (ERC) stage in the Azores has a prove that takes the exact same road -- and leads some experienced drivers to quit, but it is said by the drivers to be one of the most beautiful roads in the world.
9. Walk around the Lagoa das Sete Cidades
Take its margins and appreciate its beauty on-the-ground. You’ll find several areas for pic-nics and barbeques!
10. Drive to Mosteiros
Create the perfect end to your day with a drive to the neighboring village of Mosteiros, where you can dig your feet into its black sand beach as you await to be charmed by the best sunset on the whole island.
