Caldeirão - Corvo PRC02 COR

Category - Circular

Difficulty - Medium

Extension - 4.8 km

Time average - 2h30m

Embark on an unforgettable adventure through the protected area of Costa and Caldeirão on Corvo Island, where nature's raw beauty takes center stage. This circular trail leads you to the heart of a collapse crater atop the central volcano, one of the island's most breathtaking geosites. Ranging between 400 and 560 meters in altitude, this hike is best enjoyed in clear weather. Along the way, you'll encounter gentle cattle, including bovine, equine, and goats, adding a touch of pastoral charm to your journey.

Your adventure begins near the Caldeirão viewpoint, offering a mesmerizing view into the crater, where the serene lake and volcanic cones are said to represent the nine islands of the Azores. Descend into the crater, surrounded by lush flora dominated by vibrant peat moss. At a prominent stone marker, take the right-hand path to circle the crater counterclockwise. Here, smaller signaling poles guide your way, adding a sense of exploration and wonder.

Within the crater, you'll discover a magical world of wetlands and two tranquil lakes, sustained by the purest rainwater and the island's ancient peatlands. Corvo and Flores are home to the largest and oldest peatlands in the country, a testament to nature's enduring legacy. The lake's water level varies throughout the year, sometimes reaching the trail itself, urging you to tread carefully and respectfully.

As you continue, the trail weaves around Poço da Velha and a mystical swampy area, leading you back to the initial stone marker. Finally, ascend to the viewpoint where your journey began, feeling a profound connection to the island's wild beauty. Here, the PR 01 COR trail offers further exploration to Vila do Corvo, Cara do Índio, and Caldeirão, promising more unforgettable experiences on Corvo Island.

Cara do Índio - Corvo PR01 COR

Category - Linear

Difficulty - Medium

Extension - 10.3 km

Time average - 3h00m

This linear route connects the Caldeirão to Vila do Corvo, covering one of the least affected islands of the archipelago by human activity. Start on the asphalt road heading south, enjoying the island's views. At the house of Forestry, take the dirt path by the Trevo stream until you reach a dirt road.

Follow the marks to the artificial water tanks built between 2002 and 2013, serving the village. The Baldio area lacks cultivated fields, characterized by natural or dry stone walls. The trail circles a volcanic cone open to the South at the Coroínha and cliff of Pingas geosite. Enjoy views of Flores island and continue through fields and pastures. Near the cliff, find a basalt rock resembling an Indian face.

Descend further, flanked by Azorean heather (Erica azorica) and Azores juniper (Juniperus brevifolia), past old rock shelters and geological formations. Pass a viewpoint over Vila do Corvo and cross the road carefully to explore the village's historical area, with narrow streets and traditional architecture crucial during 16th and 17th-century pirate attacks. Near the coast, see the traditional windmills. End the trail at the beach of Areia, perfect for a refreshing dip. Visit the Eco Museum in the village center to learn more about the island's heritage.
