Where to Stay in São Miguel Island: Hotels by Area

São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores and the one with the most developed hotel infrastructure. There is something for every budget and preference, but choosing the wrong area will cost you time on the road every day.

The island is roughly 65 km long. Without a car, you are limited to wherever you sleep. With one, the full island is accessible from any base, though the east and west ends are at least an hour apart.

Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada is the island's main city and the default choice for most travelers. It has the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, and tour operators. The airport is here. Furnas

Staying here means you are on-site in the early morning when the valley is quiet and the tour groups have not yet arrived.

A car is essential if you base yourself in Furnas. The village has limited dining beyond the hotel restaurants, and everything else on the island requires driving. What you get in return is waking up in the most geologically active part of São Miguel, with thermal pools a five-minute walk away.

Surfers and travelers who want a less tourist-oriented base tend to choose Ribeira Grande.
