Inter-Island Ferry (Atlanticoline)
The ferry is the most practical option if you are already on Faial or Pico, and is also one of the most scenic short crossings in the Azores.
Atlanticoline operates year-round ferry service connecting Faial (Horta), São Jorge (Velas), and Pico (Madalena) in a Triangle Islands circuit. The crossing times are:
Faial to São Jorge: approximately 45 minutes. São Jorge to Pico: approximately 30 minutes. Pico to Faial: approximately 30 to 35 minutes.
Frequency varies by season. In summer (June to September), there are typically 2 to 3 departures per day between each island. In winter, service reduces to 1 departure per day on most routes, and can be cancelled in rough weather.
The ferry departs from Porto das Velas in São Jorge. The terminal is in the center of Velas, within walking distance of most accommodation and restaurants.

São Jorge has no public bus network that covers the full island. A rental car is essential for visiting the fajãs, the north coast, and the western end of the island. The airport is 3 km from Velas, and car hire desks are available at the terminal.
Taxis serve the airport and can be pre-booked for the arrival transfer. Several local taxi drivers also offer informal island tours.
If you are coming by ferry and already have a car on another island, note that Atlanticoline does not operate car ferries between the Triangle Islands, so you will need to hire a separate car on São Jorge.

São Jorge Airport (SJZ) is a small regional airport. It has no duty-free, minimal food options, and the runway sits on a narrow ridge that can make landings memorable in windy conditions. Fog and wind occasionally cause delays or diversions to Faial. Budget extra time in your schedule if connecting to an international flight the same day.
Ferry cancellations due to weather are more common in winter and spring. If you are relying on the ferry to catch an onward flight, allow at least one buffer day.
