From Boca do Inferno, you’ll see a mix of volcanic craters and lakes, including Lagoa do Santiago, Lagoa Rasa, Caldeira do Alferes, and Caldeira Seca. All these features are part of the vast crater that surrounds Sete Cidades.

Tips for visiting Boca do Inferno viewpoint

For the best experience at Boca do Inferno, arrive early in the morning, ideally before 9 a.m., to enjoy the stunning sightlines without the crowds. Park at the designated area along the main road and begin your visit with a 10-minute flat walk, followed by a 10-minute uphill trail to the scenic point.

High in the hills, this lookout is often much cooler, up to 10 ºC (50 ºF) lower than nearby areas. It’s a good idea to bring a light jacket, especially if you're visiting with kids.

Lagoa do Fogo Viewpoint

Located at 776 meters above sea level, this stunning viewpoint in São Miguel island sits along the scenic road between Caldeira Velha, in Ribeira Grande, and Casa da Água, in Lagoa. It offers panoramic scenes over Lagoa do Fogo and the island’s northern coastline, an ideal place for relaxing, taking photos, or simply soaking in the island’s raw beauty.

You’ll find a parking area and easy access for visitors with reduced mobility. Hiking trails also start from here and lead down to the crater lake for a closer look. Important note: From June to September, access to Lagoa do Fogo by car is restricted between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM for non-residents. During this time, you’ll need to take the official bus to Lagoa do Fogo, which departs from Caldeira Velha parking lot or Casa da Água. This Lagoa do Fogo shuttle bus costs 5 euros for non-residents, and tickets can be purchased online (here) or at select tourist accommodations across the island.

Vista do Rei Viewpoint – Among the most iconic views in the Azores

Vista do Rei, or “King’s View,” is one of the most iconic attraction in São Miguel island, offering incredible sights over the famous twin lakes of Sete Cidades. It was named after King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia, who visited the site during their royal tour in 1901, and were captivated by the breathtaking scenery.

Located on the island’s west coast, at an altitude of 544 meters, this lookout provides a panoramic view of the massive Sete Cidades volcanic crater and its striking green and blue lakes. The scenery is so spectacular that it’s been named one of Portugal’s 7 Natural Wonders.
