Top 10 Viewpoints in São Miguel Island, Azores

1. Boca do Inferno (Sete Cidades)

The most photographed viewpoint on the island. Boca do Inferno sits on the rim of the Sete Cidades caldera and looks down over the twin lakes — Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde — as well as several smaller crater lakes: Lagoa do Santiago, Lagoa Rasa, Caldeira do Alferes, and Caldeira Seca. The view captures the full scale of the volcanic complex in a single frame.

Getting there involves a short uphill trail from the road. Allow 20 minutes from parking. The site is substantially cooler than the coast — up to 10°C lower — so bring a light jacket regardless of the weather in Ponta Delgada.

Sunset from Boca do Inferno is good; so is the early morning before cloud builds on the caldera rim. Arriving before 9 a.m. also avoids the bulk of the tour groups. From the viewpoint, follow signs to Lagoa do Canário for a quieter extension.

2. Vista do Rei (Sete Cidades)

Named after King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia, who visited in 1901, Vista do Rei looks directly down into the Sete Cidades caldera from 544 metres. It is the classic angle for the twin lakes — the one that appears on most São Miguel photography — and was named one of Portugal's 7 Natural Wonders. Directly adjacent is the abandoned Monte Palace Hotel, which adds a layer of visual interest to the stop.

Vista do Rei is easily accessible by car with a parking area on-site and no significant walking required. It is one of the more visited spots on the island; early morning is the least crowded time.

3. Lagoa do Fogo Viewpoint

At 776 metres above sea level, this viewpoint sits on the road between Caldeira Velha (Ribeira Grande) and Casa da Água (Lagoa). It looks over Lagoa do Fogo and the north coast. Hiking trails depart from here and descend to the lake itself. If you want a wider panorama, the paved path toward the antennas continues to Pico da Barrosa, which has views across the full island.

Access note: From June to September, private vehicles cannot access Lagoa do Fogo between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. During these hours, take the official shuttle from Caldeira Velha parking or Casa da Água. Tickets are purchased online at lagoadofogo.pt.

4. Pico do Ferro (Furnas)

At 567 metres, Pico do Ferro gives the best elevated view over the Furnas valley, including Lagoa das Furnas and the geothermal area around it. The viewpoint is a short drive from Furnas village, has a parking area, and is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. A good stop before or after a Furnas village visit.

5. Nossa Senhora da Paz (Vila Franca do Campo)

Located above Vila Franca do Campo at 215 metres, this viewpoint is reached by a staircase leading to a whitewashed chapel. From the top, you see the Vila Franca do Campo islet (a flooded volcanic crater used as a protected swimming area), the town below, and the surrounding coastline. Parking is available at the base. An easy stop that combines culture and landscape in one place.

6. Ponta da Madrugada (Nordeste)

The best sunrise viewpoint on the island. Ponta da Madrugada sits on the eastern tip of São Miguel, on a clifftop above the Atlantic. It is one of the first places on the island to receive morning light. The surroundings are tended, with gardens and a good approach path. If you are staying in the northeast or passing through, a pre-dawn drive here is worthwhile.

7. Santa Iria (Porto Formoso)

A north coast viewpoint near Porto Formoso, looking over the coastline between Ribeira Grande and Maia. It is a natural stop when driving the north coast road between Ponta Delgada and the tea plantations at Gorreana. Easy access, parking on-site, no walking required.

8. Ponta do Escalvado (Várzea)

Located on the west coast near Mosteiros, this viewpoint looks over the Atlantic and the Mosteiros islets, a cluster of volcanic sea stacks off the northwest shore. A good stop on a day circuit of the western end of the island that includes Sete Cidades.

9. Castelo Branco (Ponta Garça)

A less-visited viewpoint in the parish of Ponta Garça on the south coast. A castle-like tower gives elevated views over the coastline. The access track is narrow and may not accommodate larger vehicles; park on the main road and walk the short distance in. Worth including if you are driving the south coast route.

10. Vista dos Barcos (Nordeste)

A quiet coastal lookout in Nordeste with views over the north coast and the Ponta do Arnel Lighthouse. The "Boat View" name refers to the position from which fishing boats were traditionally watched returning from the east. A peaceful stop on a northeast coastal drive, with less foot traffic than the western viewpoints.
