Explore The Gorreana Tea Factory in São Miguel Island

Discover Gorreana: The Premier Tea Factory of Europe

Established in 1883, Gorreana is Europe's oldest and only remaining tea plantation, earning the region the title of the Tea Capital of Europe. This prestigious facility represents a significant piece of tea history and culture, embodying centuries-old traditions and techniques passed down through generations. The story of Gorreana is deeply intertwined with the history of tea cultivation in Europe. Tea was introduced to the Azores in the 18th century, and by the 19th century, the region's temperate climate and fertile soil were found to be ideal for tea production.

A Little Bit of History

Gorreana was founded by Ermelinda Gago da Câmara and her son José Honorato, who saw the potential of these conditions to cultivate high-quality tea. They established the factory, which has been family-run ever since, spanning five generations. One of the distinguishing features of Gorreana is its commitment to sustainable and traditional farming practices. Unlike many modern tea plantations, Gorreana eschews the use of pesticides and herbicides, opting instead for organic methods that have been used for over a century. The tea is harvested manually, maintaining a connection to traditional practices and ensuring the highest quality of the final product.

Visitors to the Gorreana Tea Factory are treated to a unique experience. The factory offers tours that showcase the tea production process from leaf to cup. This includes the plucking of tea leaves, the drying and fermentation processes, and the final sorting and packaging stages. The factory also features a museum that displays antique machinery and artifacts from its long history, providing insight into the evolution of tea production over the years. The tea produced at Gorreana is renowned for its distinctive flavor, which is attributed to the volcanic soil and microclimate of the Azores. The factory produces several varieties of tea, including black and green teas, each with its own unique profile. The most famous of these is the "Hysson," a green tea that is cherished for its aromatic and slightly tangy taste.
